A Few of my SPS

Looks good so far. Why the plan to change the rocks?
Aren't these rocks fairly new?

I agree, its looking good so far, so why the change of rocks?

Thank you. I don't like my aquascape and am bore of looking at these Fiji rocks. So, I'm going to try something different. Perhaps, I'm not looking hard enough, but I haven't seen any tank(s) that uses solely Tonga branches. I will be using/modifying the below and making another. If it doesn't turn out well, I will redo again. :-(

I am about to begin an upgrade restart to a 180 gallon tall tank. 72” long by 18” front to back by 31” high. I have been looking for and open rock look that has a taller arrangement. I like yours and will use it for inspiration on my tank.

Thanks

Thank YOU for looking. I'm glad that you found something that you like. Please post some pictures.

Your last reef was AMAZING! I imagine this one will follow suite in short order :)

Thank you for your kind words and encouragement. IMHO, there will be many changes along the way before everything comes together. Let's see what this tank will unveil to us.

Half my scape is made of those branches. I'm sure it will look great with the corals. :)

Do you intend to add some liverock to the sump?

I'm so glad that you ask this question. I hope that you and/or others will be able to share some insight regarding how well these Tonga branches serve as filtration.

Per my research and readings, these Tonga branch rocks are not porous; therefore, filtration wise they are not good as good as other types. What are your thoughts?

As far as additional LR in the sump. My sump is divided into 3 chambers, left to right... Fuge which has nothing it it right now, return, and skimmer. The Fuge section is roughly 10 gallons. Being so small, I'm not sure if adding the rocks will help any.

For my tank I added Sera Siporax in the sump in the middle section (also have a couple of pieces of liverock, but they are small). This area has the greatest turbulent water movement. Coupled with a 1inch sandbed my nitrate remains at or around 0.2ppm always. PO4 remains less than 0.02ppm and I havent used GFO in around 4-5 months.

Richard (Jackson6475) has a large cube tank with the display rock as branch type, but added lots of rock rubble in the sump.

Every few months I take out the large bag of siporax and swish it thoroughly in old tank water to keep it clear. At some point I may add more and just throw out the old stuff after a month or two.

Sahin, throughout my readings about this product, I cannot determine how much is needed per gallon. My tank is 225gallons. Would you know approximately how much Siporax I will need? Please kindly advise.

Thank you.

I dont think anyone knows...I think around 4-5litres would be required for your tank. Less if you add some quality liverock into the sump area.

Have a look at Denadai's thread: I recall he recommends 1L for every 100L of tankwater. Denadai had no rocks and sand; only plastic rocks...so you I think around 4litres with a bit of rock in the sump will do fine.

Bump. You are one of the top sps keepers in my "list". How is the tank?

+1. :)
Give us a little taste, at least..
Every great tank started from humble beginnings..

Thank you for checking in. Wishing everyone a belated Happy New Year.

Changes from my last post: reaquascape and added 10 Liters of Siporax. Not sure what has happened, but since adding the Siporax (October) the tank has diatom til today. I tested everything...water source (0 TDS), changed my bulbs, less feedings.....and still can't get rid of the diatom.

In reading 1 of Reefvet's recent post in the Siporax thread, he shared that "Siporax is Sintered glass. It's not a calcium based structure that will deteriorate (though glass is made from Silica,". Based on Reefvet's sharing, I "believe" this is why the tank has diatom. I've posted on the Siporax thread and awaiting for Reefvet's advice. Worst case scenario, I may remove the Spiroax completely.

In the interim, here are some of my frags.

Nick!
Stunning!!
That first one is absolutely out of this world!
They all have great growth and rediculous colour!!
Very nice!
Looking forward to your tank taking shape.
Don't leave us for so long.. Do what I do... Just take the same picture over and over again. :)
Curious, what is the blue coral below he crazy rainbow awesomeness in shot 3?

Very nice Nick! Do you have a New Year FTS you could share?? :D

Regarding the diatoms, I don't see any in the background of your photos. Here's a good thread discussing silicates if that is indeed your issue. Is your clean up crew sufficient? IMO, a lot of algae problems are due to an overlooked clean up crew.

Thank you, Matt.

To be part of the forum, I'd love to share pics of each coral that I have. My problem is my camera and the size of my frags. Camera can only zoom so far. When the frags are boogers, they don't really help.

Here are the SPS names in the order that they were posted: Phoenix Rising, World Wide Coral (WWC) Yellow Tips, PC Superman, and SSC (per Jason Fox, this is the version which they 1st release at MACNA. Can't remember the year that he has referenced). The blue tips on my PC Superman comes and goes. In my experience, there has always been a sps that will assist me in indicating what my parameters are. With my current tank, I "believe" this is the coral. I hate testing, but may have to in order to see what is best to keep the blue tips.

Thank you, Mindy.

FTS - Will work on that and will post accordingly.

Diatoms - You don't see them cause I just vacuumed the sandbed. :-) That dreaded Diatom looks hideous.

Clean Up Crew Sufficient? I would say no as I feel they are a waste of money. Personal opinion, of course. :-) With all the tanks that I've owned, I only keep approximately 10 Mexican Turbos at most and Tiger Tail Sea Cucumber.

Thank you for the Diatom link. Will definitely read up on it.

If you added 10 more snails and the diatoms went away would that be a waste of money? :p

Well, Nick, I don't see much of a diatom issue.. I have to say..
I do see incredibly coloured corals..
Fts would certainly be nice! :)
There is a blue coral below the PC superman - out of focus..
Looks like a nice deep water..

DEFINITELY NOT! LOL

1 of the online vendor had a great holiday deal on Nassarius snails. I contemplated too long. By the time I placed my order, they ran out. But, this will be my next step in attempting to overcome this dreaded diatom. If this doesn't work, I'm going to either remove the Siporax or the entire sand and will replenish the sand in due time. Wish me luck!!

On the way to glory again nick buddy:beer:
Awesome pics and i can't wait to see the fts.Corals look goooood:)

I don't see one dino in that picture!!!! your corals on their worst day look 1000x better than my corals on their best day!!!! Keep up the great work Nick!!!!

Corals look stunning! Didnt expect any less from you though.

With regards to Siporax; all my friends in the UK use them and there is a long thread which started off from my tank thread; no one else has reported issues with Dinos or Diatoms as far as I know.

What are you feeding the corals and fish on a daily basis?
