A few of my SPS

No time for this any more

No time for this any more

Thanks for all the well wishes everyone. With all I have going on in life these days I just don't have the time to dedicate to my reef anymore so I am at the point - what lives, lives & what dies, dies. Loosing interest more every day and haven't even done a water change for about 3 months now. For all intensive purposes I am pretty much done. I think I'll keep the tank running but even that is uncertain at this point.

Sorry you feel this way Greg, we all have these times with the hobby, sometimes it is best to take a break. I would keep the equipment and the tank running with little influence, sell the corals, and maybe just go with fish only and live rock for a minute, at some point the stoke will kick in again, and your rock will be clean and cycled and ready to plug corals again. Either way, best wishes, truly hope something changes, you are a staple around here man!
Regards,

I too am sorry you feel this way, but I also understand. I have a touring motorcycle that I have not even started this year. It is still in storage in my yard. I just had no interest in riding this year.

I dont plan to sell it because, like reefing, I know the bug will bite me again.

I like @plyle02 idea, but also know you will do what is right for you. I wish you all the best as you go through this stage.

I feel you Greg, my tank once consumed my every waking hour, and when some crazy RTN or bleaching event happened I flipped. Not any more. Now I make sure the tank is maintained and let nature do its thing. I lost some stuff but the survivors are doing great and the stress is gone. I'm actually loving the big survivor colonies more than having 50 bits of this and that to be honest. You should try it, most pleasing. Eventually the tank hits cruise control and there's time for other passions, like diving. I can leave my 250 in the hands of a teenager now and it looks the same when I get back. Leaving for Cozumel Wednesday buddy with no tank angst :) Good luck with what ever you choose to do.

This same thing just happened to me about 7 months ago.. I kept it running and some large colonies stayed around and are doing great.. Getting back into it at the moment but with a different passion than the previous 20 years.. Minimalistic and easy is this approach.. Good luck in your decisions and at least you accomplished totm twice =).. No one can forget that achievement..

Man, I hear you, Greg. It's not happy news but I sure understand where you are coming from..
Having been without a tank and having had a tank go downhill on me, I understand how it can suck the life out of you and make you want to give up.
I think you are doing the right thing. Sometimes you need to walk away and get some distance and perspective, and then reevaluate.
You really are an institution, Greg and reefing is in your blood- there's no doubt there.
Don't chase the reef, let it come back and bite you again.. If you want..
Good luck!

Sorry to hear that.

I know the feeling.....
My reef year was a pice of sh¨** till now.

I thought of give up a several times. Now, after the tank crashed, I wanna go on a simple path with the new set up....Less sps....less fish....less dosing/testing/controlling

Take a break.....take a deep breath.....and decide...
That's what I did when my tank crashed.
At the end of the day...it's pretty much what we got to do.

Best of luck.

Alex

Hi there,

I've followed your tank and your journey in silence for sometime. Thank you for sharing your loss. We all share your pain. And for sharing your successes. Your decision is an excellent one. reduce the maintenance demands of the tank, run it at a lower "load", and as Alex alludes to, it will recover in time. Things change in nature, and in aquariums. This is now a different reef.

So sorry to read that greg:(
We all go through this phase from times to times and you know better what's best for you to do.Really hope you'll find motives and "reef appetite" again buddy.

This tank has inspired me over and over again and i owe you many thanks for that man:love2:

I have loved following your tank. It is a truly great reef. In the past, I have shut down my tank as well. Life was busy and difficult and the tank no longer rewarding. It had become a complication and no longer a joy.
I am glad that I kept it running minus a lot of corals. One fish, some rock and lps. It was ready and in perfect shape when I was ready to dive in again. It took a couple of years for me but I was happy with the decision to have kept some life going in the tank.

Good luck and I look forward to seeing your excellent reefsmanship again one day.

Oldude,

Your tank has been an inspiration. Hang in there, I just went through a total sps loss. Over $2,000 in high end sps gone in 2 months. It broke my heart and I was incredibly close to throwing the towel in. If it wasn't for my two clownfish which one i have had for 12 years, I would have quit. I found out my new maxspect gyre failed and i didnt notice it with the other pumps on. I slowly started losing colonies and lost them all before noticing the pump issue. The main tank pump hardly put out any flow, but masked the gyre with surface agitation to make it look normal. I installed the new pump and my tank restarted and new frags are doing great. Still, tough pill to swallow....I feel when our tanks are flourishing, it is a stress reliever and renews the soul. I really enjoy seeing your sps and it gives me something to shoot for on a small 50 gallon scale. Wishing you a quick sps recovery!

Hey Greg, any updates? How are you feeling about the tank these days?
Hi Mindy thanks for checking in - I think my lack of posts probably says a lot about how I feel about my tank these days. I have been too busy with work (to give a damn) I mean to give it the attention it needs so have lost a lot of interest. I have also lost many of my favorite corals however there are still a few pieces I've managed to keep alive in spite of only doing one water change in the past 8 months. I am trying to get some enthusiasm back and even bought a few corals a few weeks back. I also had lost the charger to my camera but just found it the other day so I thought I'd take a few pictures today. I will start a fresh post and load em' up.

I picked up a browned out Aussie A.Sarmentosa colony a few weeks ago shown here in the middle, it still has a long way to go for color but it seem to be healthy

I really like what this "war favia" has done - it hasn't skipped a beat.

Although rather invasive - I think this rainbow monti looks pretty cool when it overgrows old corals that checked out early.

I need to keep an eye on this humilis as the enemy almost has it surrounded.:fun2:

That is a very cool looking Rainbow Monti.
I have pretty much removed montis from my system because they are so invasive and space is limited in my display. They also suck down a lot of alk. Non the less, they are very beautiful in a big tank and provided incredible back round color.

Has it attacked any living corals yet? or only encrusted dead skeletons ?

Yes, that's what I was worried about! I lost interest so many times, took my tank down, sold everything. Then set it up again a year later for twice the price. :hmm5:

The tank seems to be humming along ok without you. Some losses are expected, and color too. Do you have it set up in a way that water changes are quick and easy to do?

Yes it grows over the living & the dead if left alone.
