Three things -

1- thats the second time today i posted something and it didnt show up

2- i said 'other things' heh heh heh....

3- on a windows xp laptop- anyone know how to force it to use the wired ethernet thats plugged in rather than go to the wireless connections? if the wire is plugged in (which it is) i want it to use that rather than my neighbors who apprently all have unsecured wireless access (thanks neighbors)...

yes, i just retried that- i disabled the wireless and then disabled the wired connection and then re-enabled - it keeps saying limited or no connectivity and it cant get an address- same thing happened when i tried it at work... it says enough to knows its on a 100mbps network, but its only transmitting out a few packets...not receiving any

good for me none of my neighbors knows how to secure their wireless nets-

bad for me that i cant figure out how to force a wired connection

Doug,

I don't know if this is the answer or if it will help, but I found this on the Microsoft website:

To turn off this setting

1.

Right-click the wireless connection icon in the notification area, click Status, and then click Properties.

2.

On the Wireless Networks tab, remove any unrecognized networks from the list of Preferred networks by selecting each one individually and then clicking Remove.

3.

Click Advanced, and clear the Automatically connect to non-preferred networks check box.

If your running on a router, you might need to reboot (unplug it and plug it back in after a few minutes). Same with the cable modem. That will force them to reassign IP addresses.

This may have been thought of already because it'd be pretty obvious, but alot of laptops come with power on-off switches for the wireless networking function. That's probably not the case with your computer, Doug. Try this (something like what Lonnie said):

Click the control panel for your network connections
Right click on the Wireless Connection and select Status
Click the General tab and then click Disable

You'll then have to setup your Local Area Connection to use your normal ethernet port. Before you do so, turn off your computer, turn off your router, turn off your Cable modem for a minute or so, then turn the modem on again. Once you've got all greens on the modem, turn the router on and restart your computer. Restarting your modem will cause the Cable Modem to ask the network you're on for a new IP address. If Windblows works the way it's supposed to, you might even have connectivity through your ethernet port after you reboot. If not, open a dos window, and at the command line, run "IPCONFIG /release" (without the quotes). Then run "IPCONFIG /renew".

Whatever you do, if Windows says it found new hardware during your reboot and that hardware is the Wireless port, don't set it up yet--we can work on that later.

BTW, I've used both types of connections on my laptop. It shouldn't be causing this trouble. If you really get in a bind, let me know and we can walk through the process tomorrow on the phone if you'd like to.

ok everyone--

First off sorry I haven't gotten on sooner--

Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to house my tankmates. I am always amazed to see how we all end up sticking together and backing each other up when anyone is in need. It is most greatly appreciated.

The fish and corals are getting taken cre of. I don't have anything too delicate so they're fine, and Chris is going to house them temporarily until I can get atank set up.

I'm sure you all know I'm a pretty private person, but as there's been so many posts and I KNOW everyone hates being left out of the juicy gossip the gist of it is I had to leave my former "relationship", and of course it got ugly real fast. i want to thank the American justice system and some particularly insensititive police precincts for NOT helping me: i essentially had to blitzkrieg my son's dad's house myself with my Doug's wife and run out with my kid to get him out of a dangerous situation and into my custody, which we managed to do without getting anyone hurt (I just imagined I was Konrad) Gotta love the courts.

Once again thanks everyone--things are calm now, my little boy is sleeping here, I apologize for getting "personal" but for all the help everyone offered you guys deserved to know why I was in an emergency.

Oh and two things--
1. I'm not moving to Michigan.
2. ReefJunkie Bill-start drawing up contracts and making sales calls. I'm going to need a full time job, so if you know anyone who needs work done on their house let me know...:)

Thanks all.

Im glad everything has worked out so far. Your on your way to alot of good things. Im just glad you and your son are safe. Thats the most important thing :)

Christine,
I'm a little late to the party here, sorry about that.
From what I have pieced together, you are in a state of transition right now. It's too bad you have to deal with this now, during the busiest week of the year, but I'm getting the feeling that you know what's best for you and your little guy.
I'm glad you're both safe, that's what counts the most. Add my name to the long list of those offering to give you a hand any way we can.

I'm glad you and Jeremy are out of the eye of the storm. If you need anything just ask.

Anything more personal though perhaps shouldn't be posted here. Probably be "safer" to keep some things out of the "public" eye for your safety.

Just my two cents.

As for the laptop - not really a pressing issue as apparently my mneighbors are kind enough to donate their wireless networks to my use---

I hadnt reset the cable modem - I just popped the ethernet cables and threw in a enet switch after the modem and then reattached my own pc and then the laptop. My pc still worked fine, the laptop never acquired an address.

I did try disabling the actual wireless portion through the control panel and then rebooted the laptop after configging the LAN to be the only connection.

I'll have to try all the shutdowns and the release/renew.

doug if you have the 1 pc direct to the cm then you need to just unplug the cm and plug it back in if your still getting limited or no connectivity check your firewall thats usually # 1 cuplrit.

for anything else give us a call and let us check the CM could be your modem needs to be upgraded because of the boost upgrade and its freezing the modem

is there a firmware/software upgrade for the cm? mine is fairly new - a few months old- got it when we upgraded to include voip also...

i think its something with the laptop itself in the config- could be the firewall... i did the same setup at work and it did the same thing- one enet drop, the same switch on the drop and then i plugged in the laptop and my desk pc into the switch - desk pc got the connection, laptop didnt- ill go through the settings....

oh yeah- thinking- it was setup (from dell) with i think mcafee firewall- they have a lot more settings then the winxp one- it could be disallowing all connections over the lan and not the wireless

keith on a side note- my cable modem has been dropping connection a lot lately - for a minute or so and then resetting itself... ?????

Your desktop worked, while the laptop never did, eh. Try typing the following IP address into your web browser's address window (like you would any web address):

192.168.1.1

If you're asked for a username and password, try typing the word admin into the pword field. Alot of routers allow access to their admin tools through a web browser. If that's the case with yours, we should be able to work out the issues you're having relatively easily.

no router - just an unmanaged gig-e switch... im (pretty) sure those dont have any config- they self config ...
i think i can do that? drop a switch on my cable modem ? either way i know i can do it at work, ive had a bunch of devices going through the switch at once - just not that laptop- i think its got to be that...

Christine,
Glad everything is working out, Now just try to make the best and enjoy the holiday's with your son and family.

I would also listen to Lonnie's advice...

You can always count on the "LIRA ARMY" in a pinch..
