This may have been thought of already because it'd be pretty obvious, but alot of laptops come with power on-off switches for the wireless networking function. That's probably not the case with your computer, Doug. Try this (something like what Lonnie said):
Click the control panel for your network connections
Right click on the Wireless Connection and select Status
Click the General tab and then click Disable
You'll then have to setup your Local Area Connection to use your normal ethernet port. Before you do so, turn off your computer, turn off your router, turn off your Cable modem for a minute or so, then turn the modem on again. Once you've got all greens on the modem, turn the router on and restart your computer. Restarting your modem will cause the Cable Modem to ask the network you're on for a new IP address. If Windblows works the way it's supposed to, you might even have connectivity through your ethernet port after you reboot. If not, open a dos window, and at the command line, run "IPCONFIG /release" (without the quotes). Then run "IPCONFIG /renew".
Whatever you do, if Windows says it found new hardware during your reboot and that hardware is the Wireless port, don't set it up yet--we can work on that later.
BTW, I've used both types of connections on my laptop. It shouldn't be causing this trouble. If you really get in a bind, let me know and we can walk through the process tomorrow on the phone if you'd like to.
