Achilles Tang Primer

Ok Achilles Family,

Here's the deal. I am upgrading my tank to a 140g. Yeah, that means I have to transfer my Achilles:confused:.

I am using my water and live rock from the existing 90g. Here's my dilemma.

I am planning on letting the tank run for about a week before the Achilles goes in: Should I let my LFS hold him for me, or put him in my 26g reef? His only other tankmate would be my Leopard wrasse.

Of course LFS tank is bigger but he may not get the attention I would give him, then on the other hand do you think the 26 will stress him out to much???

Talk to me Family!!!!!!!:spin1:

I would always recommend you put him at home as opposed to the fish store. Fish stores I believe are more stressful and you care more.

I added an Achilles Powder and an Atlantic to my 200 a month and a half ago and they all doing well. Nori is out for them almost all the time. I feed with selcon also. I also wouldn't take them to LFS, you dont know what happens there. Good luck on the transfer!!

Yeah, I was leaning more towards keeping him at home but I know this dude. He is going to be like a pinball machine, back and forth in that 26g:fish1:, but hopefully he won't stress to much. This is not something I look forward too; will keep you guys posted once I decide to stop procrastinating.

Hi

dose anyone have any updates the would like to share of there achilles tang

cheers scott

I have had my Achilles for 6-weeks now. It still only eats Nori. Luckily it enjoys eating all different colors and brands of nori. However, I really wish it would start eating something besides Nori.... I'm going through a ton of this stuff and feeding 3-half sheets 3x a day. DD said that it was eating Hikari Mysis and Spirulina Brine before they sent it to me. In my tank it doesn't even sample the frozen, won't touch pellets either. Only nori.
Did anybody else experience this and then have the Achilles all of a sudden start eating something besides nori?
Here is a list of what I have tried and it will not eat. (I've tried variations of soaking in garlic,selcon,vita-chem etc...doesn't work)
Hikari Mysis
PE Mysis
Spirulina Brine
Formula 2
Emerald Entree
Instant Ocean Herbivore grazing block (not even the "pigs" liked this stuff, waste of money)
Formula 2 Flakes
Spirulina Flakes
Formula 2 Pellets
Spectrum Pellets
Live Black Worms
Hikari Blood Worms
Prime Reef Flakes
Brine Flakes
SeaVeggies Mixed Flakes(it will eat these because it is tore up NORI)
H2O Frozen Herbivore cubes
Cyclopeeze
Reef Nutrition MacroFeast Algae

Not that I'm recommending you add a fish, but in QT, my achilles ate only Nori. Once I added him into a tank with a couple of other tangs (not well thought out in retrospect) he quickly learned from them to eat EVERYTHING.

I noticed you mentioned PE mysis. Is that frozen? Mine loves frozen food. Given a choice between frozen and nori, he eats frozen.

Another thing I did was buy nori "bulk." As an example:

http://www.marinedepot.com/Two_Litt...ttle_Fishies-TL3313-FIFDDRSWSS-TL3355-vi.html

This is 100 sheets and definitely a better deal than buying it by the 10 sheets or so.

You can buy the same nori at your local Asian market for around $10.

I read a couple of posts that that Nori from the asian market has much less nutritional value than that used in fish food. Just a fraction of the protein. Anyone have proof of this?

Probably posted by folks who re-package it and sell it for $40 a bag...

I have been feeding my Angels and Tangs Nori from my local Asian market for the last two years or so and they eat it with gusto; I soak the sheets in garlic and vitamins before feeding it to them.....

Anyone have an AT in a 300 gallon or larger FOWLR Tank? Im setting up my tank now that will be fish only but scared that water parameters might play an issue.

Finally my Achilles!

Finally my Achilles!

My Last Tang, I mean it this time. He arrived today from DD. Water temp 70 spec gravity 1.025. I dripped him for 3 hours with a bubbler and brought temp to 78. I thought sg would be 1.021 but DD holds coral and fish at 1.025. My sg was very close so that made it much easier on the fish. I hesitantly introduced him to the display no quarentine, I think its best for the fish, specifically this fish. Too big and active for a 40 breeder. To my suprise there was zero aggression from the other 4(Sohal 3.5", Hippo 4" Purple 4" Yellow 4"). I think size had a lot to do with this. He's 3/4 of an inch larger on paper but quite a bit bigger than them. Almost twice the body mass of my sohal. I'll feed this evening and I suspect he will eat. He seems quite content in the tank picking off rocks and power heads. Color thus far is a 10. I was rather nervous with this purchase as they are quite pricey and expert only, but for now I'm cautiously optimistic.

good thing you added him last. I just added a yellow tang to my tank and my AT went absolutely bonkers. He would not leave the yellow alone for the first day. Now he seems to be easing up on the yellow, but he definitely let him know who's tank it is.

For those of you who have had long term success keeping this tang, is a 210 too small for the long run?

I have mine in a 150 with plans of upgrading within the next year to a 220 or larger but he is still on the small side. I think you are fine with 210 depending on how many other fish, just make sure it has plenty of flow.
