Achilles Tang Primer

I have had my Red sea fir just about two years now. He eats small pellets mysis and now flakes. He also goes for this donut type food as do all my fish . A local prt store showed me this food. For the hard to eat Regals you may want to try this ImageUploadedByTapatalk1447083820.677580.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1447083841.148569.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1447083859.546306.jpg

My 8' 300G tank is almost ready for fish and one of the tangs that i've always wanted was the achillies. Should I purchase a juvenile or an adult? If its eating mysis shrimp at the LFS should I pull the trigger? $200 asking price.

New Achilles, TTM, not eating

New Achilles, TTM, not eating

Hi,

I decided to post on this thread because my other thread was not getting any replies. My lfs got in a 2.5 inch Achilles in last Thursday and I picked it up on Friday. It was solid black and looked very healthy. I didn't want them to put it in copper and I noticed it had one spot of Ich on Friday so I brought it home, acclimated and began the tank transfer process. I am using two sterilite 7 gallon bins and a couple air pumps with air stones. I have a 15 gallon shallow (2' long) qt with a tunze nanostream 6020 that is ready for him to go into after the last transfer. The problem is that it is not eating at all. I tried small bits of Mysis and green nori on a clip and nori rubber banded to a rock. I did my first transfer into bin #2 this morning at almost 72 hours. If I can't get it to eat, I am planning to transfer it into my qt, forcing me to tear it down after the next transfer. It's belly is not sunken in yet but it is a grey color and has blue rings around it's eyes. How long should I wait?

Thanks for any help!

Did it eat at the store? I would finish out the TTM then put the tang into its home and it should help the tang acclimate and start eating.

It was picking at rocks but it didn't eat. it was just there for 1 day and I didn't want to give it more exposure to diseases and the lfs was going to put it into copper as well which I didn't want to do. I know it's never a good idea to take a fish home that isn't eating but its hard to get healthy Achilles tang where I am and this one was really looking good. I forgot to mention that today it started picking at the bottom of the container but there's nothing on the bottom what so ever. I was planning to do the 12 days tank transfer then put it in the quarantine and determine if I want to dose prazi for worms. 12 days without eating is ok? What should I look for as in signs that it is not ok?

How active is it? Has the coloration come back at all? Does it have places to hide right now or is it just open to the elements? When I put mine in the tank I always shut the lights and keep the tank dark for at least 12 if not 24 hours, but inside a display tank there are places to hide.

Ok here's another one. I picked up a 2.5-3" Achilles yesterday from my LFS because I got a deal and he'd been there so long. I really didn't want one at this time but couldn't pass it up. So my question is well he get along with my current inhabitants? I have a yellow tang, hippo tang, and a Tenneti tang. The Tenneti Tang is what I'm concerned about I do not want the Achilles to terrorise him . The display is a 315 gal mixed reef that is 7' long and 3' front to back. I also have a Burgess and Declevis butterfly that may look like similar body shapes so I'm a little concerned about them as well. Any thoughts?

The Achilles won't be a issue being that he is being added last. If he would have been in the tank and then you added a tang or something similar in body type then you could have some issues

mine never want to touch any kind of nori i have put in. Red green from all kind of brands. Even that new era grazer. But he loved anykind of pellets served to the tank. That said achiles should be feed with nori to increase their immunity. Should I find out more amd keep trying feeding nori to him or just him eat pellets.

Thanks

Hendrik

Guys, I picked up a nice AT and Desjardini last night. They're in a 40B right now and my plan is this while I'm waiting for my steel stand for my 240 to be made, also we are redoing our tile flooring too
-AT has some spots for sure, so TTM is in order but not yet
-I plan on getting both of these tangs eating first, getting used to food, captive life, maybe take 2-3 weeks for that. By then stand should be done.
-once eating well, then hit them with TTM and PP. can't wait to get them healthy and DZ free

On average, how long does it take ur guys' AT to become interested in eating? The desjardini tang I have in QT with him is eating pellets and mysis so I hope it'll teach it to eat.

Will be adding a WP25 for flow today to stimulate more flow. Picky MFer.

Had one for quite a while and he ate right out of the gate when I got him as a juvenile. In my experience, the big issue with these fish being difficult is tank size. When they turn adult and get bigger, if they aren't in a large 200+ gallon tank with a lot of swimming room and spots with good current, they will get severly stressed and stop eating. Mine would even swim right in front of the powerhead with the high flow for hours. I fed a red gracilaria (reef nutrition macro feast) at first and then a dried red nori (Emerald cove) as a daily afterwards.

Well luckily for me, just got word that my steel stand finished today. Will be a couple of weeks for my 8' to be solidly running. AT showed some interested in nori wrapped to LR vs. pvc pipe. And I catch it going after bits of nori in the water column so that's a start.

I had a 3" AT in QT for 30 days with cupperamine for a couple of weeks. He was in there with a vampire tang as well. They both ate Reef frenzy on the second day and fed heavily on nori in less than a week.
After QT for 30 days and no sign of dieses I moved them to my DT. The vampire is still looking great 2 weeks later but I lost the AT 3 days after he was put in? Any thoughts to why?
