Acid Trip Chalice - Is this for Real?

I would say the 2 pictures look nothing alike. Thing is on another forum the original pic is said to be with no photoshop and under just 14k bulbs and another its said to be actinics only. So what is the original pic really under?

Great representation of the coral. That leave me with one question for all the people that paid $400 for a frag. Are you satisfy with this new picture?

for me anyways, im still thrilled with my piece. Its crazy bright under my T5's, and yes i have a lot of blue in my tank. But thats what i like anyways, so i have no regrets.

Is it really pricey, you bet.

I only wish i could see what the mother colony would look like in my tank with my T5's...crazy, i would imagine.

in all honesty, that color for whatever reason looks like crap in the picture. Its actually very orange, far different from the bright red area. Under actinics, it does look bright yellow.

But, anyways, i just took the pic because you guys wanted to see another pic of it, from a non bias person, so there it is.

I wonder what kind of lighting they used to get that orange spot in the bottom right corner yellow in the original picture...

I dunno as I said on r2r I'm not blown away by this coral like everbody else seems to be, then again I was never a Melting Pot fan either, I do however find it a beautiful piece but I'm definitley not blown away.

Congrats to the peeps who did get frags of it, I am sure they are psyched :)

That nudi is a sponge eater. They are local for me and after i brought one in i got on a collecting run he found some sponge growing on the live rock and it was gone in minutes. He only seemed to care about the blue sponge as well. Cool little guy but it will starve to death in captivity. Better of in the wild.

hey to answer the question. i got a piece of the acid trip and yeah im satisfied. i still think its a beautiful piece and for what i have paid for chalices i would say i got the most for my money on this one. it was about an inch big which i have paid up to 250 for a quarter inch frag of a chalice that was just as nice just for being an LE. so yes im satisfied and cant wait for this thing to grow....

how can you be pleased to spend four hundred for a piece that doesnt look all that great... the first picture was sooo sick and then the reg picture under MH looks like alot of other chalice i have seen.... i guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder!!! no thanks i pass

I'm a bit confused by folks's comments on the difference between the two photos. Do they not have actinics on their own tanks, and/or never viewed corals full spectrum lighting and then just with actinics on? The difference in the same coral is very great, not just with chalices. Check out any of the favia, acan or blasto show off threads for examples. Different pigments fluoresce under different wavelengths.

Some very nice corals in this thread.:D Chalices aren't as popuar here (UK) I have three, pretty plain ones by comparison.

I have no problems with actinic shots or tanks with tons of blue and actinic lighting. I believe people in general don't like it when a coral is misrepresented with a top down shot with actinic. Last time I check, most tanks are view from the front and with 14k-20k lighting majority of the day. Actinic are great for the dawn/dust effect and that "wow" factor when the friends are over, but it doesn't represent a natural lighting.

I prefer coral photos under 'normal' lighting too. It's just people seemed confused about the colour differences. It seems obvious that the original is under actinic lighting, so I don't inderstand why people seem so upset that it looks different under 14k lights?
I personally prefer, and keep, mine under 14k too, however a lot of people do keep their coral under 20K or higher lighting. This is not unnatural either, as anybody who has dived on a real reef will testify.

I agree about misrepresentation - nothing to do with actinics though - but when people over saturate the photo and state no photoshop involved, when the end effect is the same.

I am not suggesting that people in this thread are doing that though- I don't want a fight. :)

I think a lot of the speculation will be over when enough of us who have the frags grow them out a bit, and show off our pics.

There are several factors that will affect this coral in our (consumers) tanks.

Needless to say, most of us who have purchased this piece are very serious reefers with quit a bit of experience. Also, our tank parameters are likely going to be far better than Tropicoriums, as most, if not all of us run systems with high quality skimmers, top notch lighting, and the ability to spot feed easily.

Given these factors, I think we are all likely to see the coral not only match both pictures, but even have the chance to see it far exceed the colors of the mother colony.

I can say with all honesty, that 99% of the corals that i have gotten from them, have only gotten nicer once in my personal system. I think everyone will see the same results. I know when i buy corals from nearly everywhere, colors improve in my tank. More in SPS than anything else, but LPS is no exception.

Just for reference, i shot a couple pics of the Trop, just so you can all see what im talking about.

These are just the two prop tank rooms, not including the thousands of gallons of regular tanks full of fish.

Each vat is about 2000 gallons, and there is 16 total vats. All are lit primarily with natural sunlight 90% of the time.

It is fine IMO to take pics of your corals however you wish, actinic, top down, upside down, with a spy cam, etc. Take em to Glamour Shots if you like! You have to use reverse-imagination with the heavy actinic shots.
