Hey thanks pallobi! I stopped in on your build, interesting choice with the frag plugs as coral stands. Im looking forward to seeing it mature.

oh and I forgot to mention I had one survivor from the move!!! A cortez hermit!!! I named him Hermz. My jaw hit the floor when I saw him crawling in the rock bin.. There was salt water in the bucket but no heater or water movment / airation for at least 2 weeks! strong little guy, he now has the whole system to himself!!! lucky guy, if only he knew how much work went into building his mansion!

A toast to Hermz

Bryopsis has put the brakes on my SPS stocking... waiting for the algae to subside. Oh man I miss having SPS *tear*

I was bored and made this as a joke for my local forum and thought you guys might get a kick out of it. This should make up for the lack of SPS related updates :D

Very nice coral selection you had going there! I may have missed it... did you lose them in the move or are they ok? Either way, when everything settles, this is going to be a stunner!

Just went back and read through..... Bummer on the heater situation. There are some really difficult lessons in this hobby along the way. You will be an even better reefer for it! The rockscape is Sick by the way!

Hey thanks buddy! I wish I could see how those corals would look today, I miss them. The SSC was just starting to take off and the Valida was powered by jet fuel when I tore it down. such a shame. I am very pleased with this scape and have some good plans for coral arrangement. Super stoked to get some SPS going but the bryopsis is holding me down and I just havent had the time lately to really nip it in the butt. In the next couple of months Ill be underway and photos will be taken :)

Couple of things you can try since you don't have anything in there now... You can aggressively carbon dose the system to rid it of phosphates... that should do the trick for the hair algae or try the Kent tech M route and get your Magnesium up to the 1700ppm level, which should do the trick for you as well.. Kent is the only brand that seems to work for this due to some secret ingredient.. I have not read any negative affects to coral by doing this. Also... Check you RODI unit if you're using one and make sure it doesn't need servicing... Your TDS should be reading 0. If it's not, you may be working against yourself..

That is a blue tenius

I have the Kent Tech-M waiting to go, Ive been putting it off cuz im being lazy :hammer: just need to test and start this weekend. I hope it works as the manual removal was useless. It grew back twice as strong in under a week.

The RODI is 2.5 years old. I have only changed the DI resin and that was 3 weeks ago. My TDS out is 0ppm and TDS in has never been over 65. I can see some noticable discoloration in the pre filters though so that is a concern.

I'm jealous. My TDS in has never been below 650.

Hope the Tech-M works for you. That algae should be gone by now. What's fueling that kind of algae growth. What is your nitrate and phosphate?

Love the colors you're getting with the cartoon corals.:D

YES! it should be gone by now!!!! GRRRR. Ive been thinking that it is either one of the old rocks or the portion of sandbed I used from the old tank. The sand is about 80% new and 20% used (rinsed superwell) but still it may not have been enough. Last I tested was about a week ago and the PO4 was 0ppm and nitrate was 10ppm. trite was 0 and ammonia waz also 0. Ive lost about 6 snails to the closed loop and a rogue hermit as well as 3 fish to the closed loop, sailfin tang, cleaner wrasse and a firefish! This has obviously added to the filthy water... I have been unable to work on the tank for the last 3 day since my back is out and it the worst its ever been. I hardly made it to the computer to check the forum. Ugh life can be tough sometimes lol

Im three and a half bottles into the Kent tech-M treatment for bryopsis and and happy to say that the algae is starting to turn brown! I tested mag today and it was at 1480. I am going to bump it up using BRS mag and use the next three bottles of Kent. That should hopefully finnish it off and I can start getting some SPS.

Glad to hear your starting to finally win the bryopsis battle. Stuff is horrible.

Why are you loosing so many animals to your closed loop? :(
What kind of intake strainer are you using?

Ive lost another 4 longspine cardinals in the last 3 days to the closed loop. The problem is the strainers. They are 2 inch PVC caps that I drilled a billion times. They work fine but they are clogged with bryopsis and I cant reach them to clean them out due to my back.... Once I heal I can replace the strainers with ones that have more surface area. It is wierd though, Ive been using them for awhile and never had a problem till now. Its an expencive lesson learned (clean the strainers!)
