Acros make me smile again

Brad - I bought it mainly for the fact that with so many fish, I need some backup in case of power outtage to keep the water oxygenated. This is why it is so close to the surface. I love it. If they had made vortechs back when I first designed my setup, I would have gone with a smaller CL pump (just for the back flow behind the rocks) and two vortechs in the front, on the sides. As things are now, I could never add another voretch without stripping all the tissue off the LPS on the right side of he tank. And the one I do have needs to be kept pretty low flow, again, for corals too close to it.

ReefDetective - I'm thinking it is like the ORA fuzzy mashall whachamacallit?

Thanks Peter, I'm really close to adding one, I would love to add 2 , but just like you, I'm afraid my lps wouldn't fare well. My closed loop and my return pumps are both darts. I do have good flow, but as you know very well, you're always looking for ways to improve.

With all those fish, Brad, what is your backup plan in case of power loss?

I have a 6700 watt generator that is for them, but I have to be home to start it.
A vortech with battery backup would be good insurance in case I'm gone.
I'm thinking you have the battery backup also.

Yes I do. And I may still add that second vortech, just kept on low, just to have another battery backup. I have A LOT of fish :o

Awesome, Peter, refreshing to see a nice tall stepped reef in this day and age of short and shallow. Looks so natural to me...

H8ter:lol:

I agree, that peters reef looks Awesome though, i don't know about shallow tanks not being natural looking ;) i have spent lots of time on the reef and you'd be surprised how much more water there is than rock.:D
Even when your only in the 5-25Ft depth (where i have seen the greatest density of corals) there are areas with atols areas with reef walls, and even vast fields of sand and only a few rocks every few meters. its really all dependent on what part of the reef your emulating in your head i guess......

I think it's all about perspective. If I had a really shallow tank, I'd probably want it viewable from above as much as from the side, to be honest.

Most of the reefs I have seen (and granted it's not that many) are a little taller (and layered) than 12 inches, which seems to be more the norm nowdays in 20" or so tall tanks. Don't forget that I have a shallow reef myself, and really do like the modern wider look, but when you see a taller tank like Peter's (which isn't common anymore), it really does remind me more of a "slice" of what the real reefs I have seen look like, with vertical slopes and different bio-topes as you go deeper; but again, I've never seen reefs in Fiji or the equatorial Pacific...?

I have to admit, that a tall tank worked out well for someone like me that enjoys a VERY mixed reef; affords me the space to keep many corals with various lighting needs. Plus, even with acros, I can frag and replant in a different area to see what happens to the color. Kinda neat.

Awesome tank and awesome colors! And this is post red bugs and AEFW? I can't imagine how your tank looked before them. How did you win the battle or is it ongoing? I'm currently at war with them so I'd LOVE know how you did it.

What kind of lighting are you using? Again....awesome!

Sorry I didn't see your post sooner :o

RB's were easy...interceptor 3 times and it was done.

AEFW were tough. I did a separate QT and dipped them periodically in levimasol. Hind sight - I would use Revive instead. Keeping the QT happy (alk/ca) was VERY difficult, and actually caused some of the deaths. I only made it out with about 25% of my original acros.

I run 250W DE Phoenix on Icecaps in PFO pendants.

Your tank is looking very nice Peter. Good to see you haven't completely given up SPS :D

Your tank looks great!

Thank you very much for starting this thread; it's inspirational. I ended up breaking down my tank, and found I had AEFW's. It's nice to see an amazing tank, after the QT'ing, shine through.

Very cool looking corals SD I love your red table!
So glad you had sucess vs pests too!
I would take a look to the Pocillopora if it starst to "spawn" it will be a lil problem...I had to remove mine

Thanks! Yeah, I had an issue with a green poci, and removed it. This purple one has been great though, never a single polyp, and it's been about 2.5 years now.

A couple newer pics, maybe the last for some time, since I'll be moving shortly :( Ugh, that's gonna suck....
