Agh! New 6025 won't stay together!

I just got another Tunze 6025 powerhead (the newer one with the round power cord) for my tank and i'm having trouble fitting the two pieces of the powerhead together. It doesn't matter how hard I push. They won't stay together. I'd superglue them, but I couldn't get in there to clean if I did that. Agh! Does anyone have any ideas? Is there a trick to it? I'll probably feel stupid when I get the answer! :)

Thanks for any and all help!

This is generally pretty easy to fix. The front cover if you take it off and look from the back is probably compressed into an egg shape. Likely the box just got squished a bit in transit. All you have to do is squeeze it back into a round shape. This plastic is very flexible and very difficult to break so you can squeeze it without worry. If that doesn't fix it let me know.

Do you have access to a dremel?? If you do it takes a couple of seconds to fix the problem; if not you could always take a bit of sandpaper and open up the area where the cord passes through.

I don't think that would be the cause as the new pumps should already have had this notch routered back. That is only an issue when the motor is replaced on an older pump.

Buddyboy; sorry for any confusion I missed the part about the new pump; I would go by Roger's advice I'm pretty sure he knows what he is talking about..:D

I'm having this same problem with my 6045's. I've been using them about 6 months and already 2 out of 4 will not stay together. I have one held together with a rubber band, and the other one out of the tank until I figure out what to do.

It's pretty clear that coraline algae buildup around the joining seam is contributing to the problem, but what I can't figure out is why after I scrape off all the coraline algae, the unit STILL won't hold together! I'm pretty tweaked about this, with what these little hummers cost.

I promise this works, in shipping or over time in the clamp the front cover gets out of round, if you look at it from the back you will see it is elliptical. just squeeze it back into round, pull out a bit on the areas where the tabs are and it will lock in. Do not scrape off the corralline, you can damage the pieces this way. Just soak them in vinegar and use a toothbrush to scrub it off.

Ack! No dice! :( I tried doing as you said Roger but I just can't get the two pieces to click together. I think it really is an issue where the power cord passes through. I suppose I could try dremeling it. My first Tunze (which unfortunately I had to return) never had a problem like this. It had the flat power cord.

The first ones had flat cords and the factory switched to the round cord and they just router the hole back deeper. For the European cords it is thinner so it is something they just do for the 115V versions. I suppose it is possible that the cover is from a Euro version or missed the router. I use a 1/4" dremel sanding drum when I replace a flat cord motor with a round cord motor and the results are virtually perfect.

Roger, Is tunze going to improve the tabs or something to fix this in future versions? Along with the clips this seems to be a common problem that could be fixed with a molding change.

Yes...I had this problem on a new one I recently bought (round cord FYI). I'm in Austin so I took it back to AquaTek then Roger picked it up and worked on it. The cover stays on now but I feel it is a weak connection at best.

The initial prototype was near impossible to pull apart and they deliberately made the grip weaker so maintanence would be easier, it took 45 Newtons to pull apart the prototype and when wet and covered in algae this was too much. We feared people would not know it came open or try to pry it open and damage it. They have slightly increased the pressure required recently and we are now at about 20 Newtons. My standard test is if I can hold the pump by the front cover and the back half doesn't fall off I consider it good. Usually this can be easily fixed by just pushing outward on the areas of the cover where the locking tabs are, you can weaken or strengthen the grip to suit your wishes.

My early version with the flat cord seems to have locking tabs only on one side...am I right about that? That's what I think, and anyway, even if the one side can lock, the opposite side will pop open.

I asked my local aquarium tech if he has the same problem and what he does about it. He said that he does have the problem and that he has started super-gluing all of these pumps together. (He can still pull them apart if he needs to for maintenance.)

I wouldn't advise the crazy glue, there should be four tabs, 2 on each side, they are roughly at the 2,5,7,10 o clock positions. I have seen pumps that are crazy glued together and the tabs tear off when the pump is pulled apart.

that's interesting...I am 99.9% positive that I don't have 4 tabs on these. Is it possible that your early versions didn't have 4 tabs? If I had 4 tabs I don't think I would be having the problems I'm having keeping these together.
