AI Director Beta - Who got picked? Lets talk 'Director'!

Well, when it came time for my lights to turn on this afternoon, nothing happened. I've reported my issues to the support site linked to a few posts up but for now I need my lights to work. So I've switched back to the old controller.

It seems the software on this thing should be labeled as "Alfa" instead of "Beta". Bugs are to be expected with a beta but when a lighting controller fails to let me manually control my lights and also fails to automatically control them, it hasn't reached "beta" status yet ;)

Still waiting on mine to arrive, has anyone using the controller without director experienced lights out at sunset? I still can't figure out if it's the lunar cycle or what. I am using Caribbean region settings, 2:35ramp time and lunar cycle 9pm-5am.

So I am waiting on my director to arrive as well.

As of right now is the director basically worthless or what?

Could we expect at least 10+ firmware upgrades / software patches before this is a reliable and useful product?

Well, it's not "worthless" because all of the problems being reported can be fixed via software updates. The hardware seems fairly solid. It seems they just didn't do enough testing before calling this thing beta quality and shipping them out.

Dunno how many updates it will take. However, I definitely would not call it "reliable" at this point. If you have VEGAs you might be okay(maybe). If you have SOLs connected via wireless adapters, just stick with your current controller for a while. Hopefully they'll have the basic issues fixed within a week or so.

If you signed up as a beta tester you should be prepared to deal with bugs etc. That's the point of beta testing!!
Erm, no. Bugs are one thing. A lighting controller that fails to control lights in any way (manual or automatic mode) is not a beta product. The software on this thing is firmly in "alpha" territory. Folks using it with VEGAs seem to be having a bit more luck. However, it seems AI just simply didn't do enough testing with the Director when used with SOLs via wireless adapters.

It's kind of like if you were given a new car model to "beta test" and the car won't shift out of park. Sure it turns on but it's useless at its intended purpose (driving). Things like that should be fixed before a product is sent out for beta testing ;)

From wikipedia

"Beta, named after the second letter of the Greek alphabet, is the software development phase following alpha. It generally begins when the software is feature complete. Software in the beta phase will generally have many more bugs in it than completed software, as well as speed/performance issues and may still cause crashes or data loss. The focus of beta testing is reducing impacts to users, often incorporating usability testing. The process of delivering a beta version to the users is called beta release and this is typically the first time that the software is available outside of the organization that developed it."

bottom line is we are Guinea pigs, AI will test all the BS on us then get the feedback and fix the issues. once fixed they will release the final product which will be good for general public with few to no issues. That's what we signed up for.

Haha, thanks. I know the definition of beta. I still think they should have tested it to see if the lights can actually be controlled before sending these out. The whole point of beta testing is to catch issues the development team didn't. If they didn't catch the bug where SOLs can't be controlled then that's one crappy development team.

Send me yours and I will pass it on to someone who would like to Beta test it.

You're still missing my point but I'm not going to argue. I'm glad yours works and you can help them test it. I, like several other people with SOLs had to go back to the old controller so our lights would actually turn on. If the thing can't turn our lights on then we can't use it and thus can't help them test it. You'd think that's something they would have taken care of is all I'm saying.

New to the AI Director thread

New to the AI Director thread

I just wanted to join the discussion as I have received my AI Director, set it up after some serous troubleshooting and now have gone back to the controller for functionality purposes. Hopefully they dial this thing in sooner rather than later, but I'm sure it will take a while given the lack of features.

If you signed up for beta tests then please report your issues via the feedback system. The reason it was released for beta is so that ai can have some real world testing under many different circumstances with different models of lights. They are trying to get this to not only work on your local network but also via the web, android, and IPhone. It sounds like some people thought beta meant pre release and unplugging the unit does not help.

Beta is supposed to mean feature complete which this thing is not. They just didn't do enough internal testing before sending it out to testers. Testers can't use and test something if it just doesn't work other than turning on.

I got the point. Not trying to argue. Seems some don't want to test the product in its current Beta. No worries. Pass it on to someone who does so they can provide the feedback to AI to improve it faster. Doing this will help you get the product you want faster. That is all I am saying. I am sure someone would give you what you have invested.

if someone not happy with Beta testing.i'm willing to take over for them. this Beta testing just started.give them your feedback and some time so it can be fixed.i could see being upset if it has been a year and the Director was still in Beta testing and it only worked 50% of the time.
