Algae Scrubber Basics

I agree, with all the different design ideas here there is something that can work for every type of setup. I'm starting to think I'm going to do a box around mine as well. If nothing else to keep possible spray down. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread!

I'm about to start curing about 50 lbs of Pukani dry rock. What do you guys think of running an ATS in the curing container to help remove some of the phosphates?

If it's curing with no life in there, I'd just dump some lanthanum in there. No need to complicate things.

No life just the dry rock. I thought that adding an ATS might help speed up the phosphate removal since I've read that Pukani can take many months to stop leeching phosphates. Thanks for the advice your probably right. I guess I need to follow my own advice and just go slow

This might be a good question for the Chemistry forum, but I don't think you'll get any real growth with PO4 alone. I think you're gonna need some NO3 as well. I think the lanthanum trick would be your best bet at this point.

Turbo ATS
Carbon dosing (Vinegar/Vodka mix)
Skimmer
Daily 1% automatic water changes

all working great together here.

I'm starting my ATS. Actually it's already breaking in with some nice growth after 12 days running. My plan was to slowly replace vinegar/vodka dosing as the ATS takes its turn lowering nitrate and phosphate. I'm curious about the vinegar/vodka dose you keep with the ATS working. Right now I'm dosing 0.07 ml/l daily.

I picked up a bottle of lanthanum at Lowes today. Its not SeaKlear but its lanthanum chloride under a different name. About $13 in the pool section for 32oz bottle.

I haven't reduced my dosing at all. I was dosing around 90-100ml/day of vinegar when I started. I've been playing with using vinegar and vodka at around 36ml/day. I use a ratio of about 690ml of vinegar to 310ml of vodka which is from what TMZ has been doing for many years.

This thread goes into what's in Red Sea's NOPOX and breaks down it's ratios as well.

Jason, how is your alkalinity with that dose. My dose has dropped my nitrates down substantially but caused my alk to rise to about 14. As of yesterday I am stopping the vodka/vinegar and letting the alk settle in. I also think maybe then my ATS will really take off.

I'm currently slowly dropping my Alk but it was due to something completely unrelated to the carbon dosing a few weeks ago. Carbon dosing wouldn't effect the Alkalinity like you've seen. It would drop pH either fairly quickly with acetic acid or in the long run with the ethanol.

The main issue with miracle grow is the form the N is delivered in, as we all know ammonia and urea are incredibly toxic in an aquatic environment. I'm sure it would massively boost the growth of an ats but it's much safer to use kno3 if not quite as effective. I'd recommend taking a peek at the chemistry section of a site dedicated to planted aquaria, something like the Barr report or ukaps could be quite helpful.

then again... urea and ammonium don't seem so bad?

What size pump would you guys suggest for an ATS? I've got a 75g DT with a 29g sump. My screen on the ATS is 10 1/2 x 10 1/2.

You need around 350-400 gph. Also, are you aware that this screen properly lit on both sides can support the feeding of about 8-9 cubes of food per day?

Thank you. I'm afraid that vodka/vinegar and the ATS running at the same time may reduce nitrates to 0, avoiding any further reduction of phosphate, which is my real problem. Have you observed this in your system? or have you achieved a reduction to 0 of both nutrients?

Nice read, I've given it a quick once over. I'm not sure where it suggests ammonium and urea are good additions? Just because it will be preferentially up taken by some organisms doesn't make it a good idea to add it to a system. You could make the same argument for adding ammonium to a planted freshwater system as it's also a plant's preferred form of N but the practicalities surrounding it's dosing and safety in a closed system mean that NO3 is a much safer source of N. If you give me the volume of your phyto system and how much miracle grow you add I'll crunch some numbers for you. Like I said previously, it all comes down to the levels involved.

I knew I was over doing it a bit with the screen size but not that much-lol. What size screen would I need for my setup? Thanks for all the help guys!

Yes, so I feed more. It works out well for the fish, bacteria, and algae. Some people dose a source of nitrates like potassium nitrate to boost nitrates a little to help reduce phosphates. Or some go the other side and use products to reduce the PO4 like traditional GFO or non-traditional Lanthanum Chloride. I haven't had the need to do either under normal circumstances.

My nitrates are usually under 1ppm and Phosphates under .08ppm.
