am i starving my SPS?

still having the issue with the red turf algae? if so I don't think your po4 is 0. the algae is just locking it up. my turbos have bascally stripped mine. you can have a few of them if you want. no idea on the stn though. my 30 started to do that and now that i've transferred to the 90 I had some rtn and now everything is on the rebound with better color. well if you lose anything i've got basically frags of alot of what you have.

you're still running Radiums on HQI, right?

.......if there hasn't been a lighting change recently I'd rule out lighting.

Are only Montipora affected?

What if the ballast. On the way out- par test wouldn't hurt...abc had a mh tank that looked fine, par was way down. Ballast was shot

Also, how stable are your parameters? I've had tanks where I manually dosed for Ca and alkalinity - although the parameters were always more or less in a good range, they were constantly going up and down. I had conditions similar to what you're describing. Switching to an automated, more stable approach solved the issues.

Acropora ,from curiousity reading have prey /food capturing abilites ,also as far as light goes its my understaning that acopora have been grown in the dark with food (no light) but never shown to grow the opposite with light and no food.Yeah the're brown corals(LOL) but still that aside I think it says something about feeding.I wonder why else the'd have polyps whitch fire nemotodes like sea anemones ,lps,ect..

Question for anyone :
Zoanthids ,as far as I knew are probaly the most autrophic we keep,if they are growing in your tank wouldn't that be a sign nitrogen and phosphours are not depleted.

Zoanthus are high reef animals which exhibit virtually no feeding response and may be more autrophic than protopaythoa and palythoa which exhibit strong feeding responses and may come from more turbid waters.

How much absorbtion of N and P zoanthus do is unknown but ,ime, they don't like high nutrient water .Surface reef waters run at .005ppm PO4 and around .2 to .5 ppm nitrate.
They might be an indicator of N or P limitation though as you suggests but again that's not known.
Mine have responded well to vodka and vinegar dosing and some report good responses to vitamin C( ascorbic acid). These are organic carbon sources and favorable responses by zoanthids to them may indicate absorbtion of the organic carbon is in play along with N and P or maybe they like the acetate produced when these additives breakdown.

Brandon's problem doesn't sound like a lighting issue to me at all.
I would be looking into water related issues and/or pests.

Do you have any unusual snails..... ever look into the aquarium at night with a flashlight?

I agree Gary, def not lighting, that wouldnt cause a STN and overall lousy look to SPS. its something else.

Im going to do a big water change when it comes time to start up this new tank in the next week or 2 hopefully well see a good turn around, im going to try to spread out my corals so they are not so close. the ones that have STN i will cut in the healthy tissue and superglue seal the cuts and remount them. hopefully i can get this under control

staying tuned to learn from this. Brandon - if I can help in any way, let me know!

dude uve been more than generous to me , but i thank you for the hand. We need to plan some photo shootin, and corona drinkin.....and i need to get you that cash! just let me know what u want

not too bad with alk swings lately. I have kept it above 8 since the swap over. no stray voltage, i have grounding probes to prevent that and a GFI.

one problem i have had is that, when i swapped the tank and put a bunch of new water in the system (40gallons) all my corals seemed to just explode in color. since then, the color has diminshed in a few colonies. I dont know why its gone back to its usual self again. Its makin me angry!

i have had temp swings though. I have 500 watts of heaters on my tank and it still dips badly at night when the house cools due to the cold.

idk ill keep everyone updated.

I have done a 32 gallon change last week with no change in issues

was a stupid question but had to ask :) wonder if it has anything to do the the trace elements? what do you dose and how much?

umm well most salt brands contain more than enough trace elements as long as you do regular water changes. Might be an issue for people that dont do many changes, but still a possibility. I think it has more to do with fluctuations of the water temp and alk.
