It will work just be careful and watch the strainer closely(I see pet stores do the elbow w/strainer all the time on their fish display tanks) just be sure to have someone come in during vacations who will know to be sure the strainer is free of obstructions. Also a second hole w/bulkhead and strainer/overflow as a backup incase the first clogs is an absolute must. Search for THK Diamond tools in ebay and get the 45mm for a 1 inch bulkhead or the 62 mm holesaw for a 1.5" (I got both around than $20 shipped). You could always install a glass holes overflow box at a later date if you change your mind.

Where are you located? There may be a reef club near you and there will be somebody who can drill it there. They may even have the bit to drill it.

Yup the diamond bit is the way to go. I've done a couple holes this way and as long as you use the plumbers putty dam with the water for a coolant/lubricant it is actually pretty painless. Expect it to take about 5 mins per hole on a 1/4" pane.

but does the flow rate from the sump and tank have to be a certain flow rate or can it be what ever i want? like will a half inch hole work?

Noise and surface skimming for starters.

Also an overflow box will limit the amount of water that can be drained into your sump in the event of a power outage.

Think about it. A hole in the back of the tank will drain water from the ENTIRE tank down to that point where the bulkhead/strainer is positioned when the power goes out.

A properly positioned overflow box will only drain what is in the overflow box.

-- I haven't read the thread, but with all this confusion... just go with a U-Tube style overflow box, and save the headaches --

Drilling is a far better option, but honestly if you've never done it, or can't find someone to do it for you... I think you may be asking for trouble.

Your oveflow will only drain a certain GPH... what do you think will happen if you push more water up than the overflow can drain?

You want a return pump that comes close to matching the rate that your overflow can drain, but does not exceed it.

A ball valve on the return line also helps dial it in.

I don't know of any bulkheads that would fit in a 1/2" hole. Personally I would go with a pair of bulkheads @ least 1" ID.

From Glass holes

1 3/4" (45 mm) diamond coated holesaw makes short work of cutting holes for our 1 inch bulkheads.

2 3/8" (62 mm) diamond coated holesaw. Just what the doctor ordered for our 1 1/2 inch bulkheads.
