anemone nuked the tank

:headwallblue:My large H.Mag got into my mp40,with sponge guard in place.Looked like the anemone climbed on the pump,it pulled the sponge off and tentecles got sucked in.The current must have pushed the anemone which still had hold of sponge causeing the sponge to come off .I lost all my fish except my 7 year old pair of clowns. Corals seem ok and cuc.So if you have mp40's just be careful.

Sorry for your loss.

Open grate pumps are a major no no in anemone tanks i set up. Its not worth it.

If you wanna keep a nem from here i would suggest looking into your flow situation either a wavebox or a stronger return

I will not be getting anymore anemones.On a 75 it's hard to get alot of flow,when you only have a 1'' drain.I never thought it would get into the pump with the sponge guard on the pump.

My mag did this twice and ate it up, but it never died, it still lives after having big chucks removed out of it's foot.... twice. No more open pumps!

The mag only got a few tentecle in the pump,the main body and foot were untouched.I have it in a 28 nano until it heals then takeing it back to the lfs.

Sorry to hear of your mishap. I had a mertens nuke my tank, killing all my fish but clowns too. Quite a few, tangs I had for years. I know how you feel. I really do. Painful to see all your fish in the sand, I know how it feels...

So, was this nem on an island type of rock? I also use MP40's, and using sponges, well, I've used them too, see above... I no longer use sponges, worthless in my experience... Although, a friend just posted he had a nem save because of them, so every individual has different experiences with them. I continue to use mp40's, no screens, but have just gotten a more keen eye as to happy or unhappy nems... (carpets tend to move slower..) And, I keep them at a distance it would be hard to reach in 12 hours left unattended. The imaginary line in the sand has moved as to when I "do something" or I let it ride.

So, how was the rock work yours was on? Island style that everyone says is what mags want? Just curious how it happened. Us owners get comfy in how they are "happy", if they don't move for a long time, but I've seen the same thing. Established nem going for a stroll... Again, sorry to hear.

I had a stressed mag kill all the fishes in it's aquarium.
Only my Clownfish and Highfin Cardinalfish survived.

Thanks guys,my wife is really more upset than I she had named several of the fish.I had it on an island on a mostly flat rock in the middle of the tank,it had been there for about 8 months.It was fine this morning at 7 am,by 12 noon it had traveled half way across the tank into the pump.The anemone was about 6'' below the water surface right under a 250 watt mh.

Sorry to hear about your mishap. I had a mag destroyed my tank years ago when I was keeping anemones. It climbed to the overflow box and got stuck and caused the tank to overflow. Of all time, it had to do it when I was on vacation.

The anemone has grown quite abit,it is approximately 19'' to 20'' across.Really getting to big for the 75,I am looking to stay away from any anemone that gets huge.

Sorry about you mishap. Big anemone need big tank. Either sell him or get a larger tank. My 16 inches Gigantea is getting too large for my 65 g tank, so I took him out to a 30 inch cube, about 100 g tank. Square tanks are much better for anemones.

I have a 240 but don't trust it to hold together.The seams were turning white so I tore down my reef tank and made it into a turtle tank..I will get another 240 some day for a reef set up.

Yeah, buuuuummer, sorry to hear about your tank! I do think the degree to which you can provide a tall pedestal with high light and flow will mitigate movement. I have designed my aquascape such that my Mag would have to go down its rock almost 15 inches in order to move around the tank. About the only thing I worry about is him letting go and floating around the tank - but I have never had that happen in 15 years of keeping these animals.

It got big enough to touch the front and back glass,so I guess it thought could get higher.The rock it was on was about 12'' from the sand bed and centered in the tank.

The anemone is almost back to normal except for the short tentecles that caught in pump.I have started on the 240,should have it set up by next weekend.
