Angelfish fans come on in...

Wait, so you got that angel for under $60!? And YOU don't even know what it is!? Wow, thats incredible! Can't wait to see it develop... stuff it with food and make it grow! haha. Goodluck with it John.

There is no one that can say with certainty what this fish is... many times it's knowing what you do not know that helps... I'm waiting to hear on more people to get their opinions... and stay tuned for more interesting specimens...

Well, I just heard back from buddy and THE world authority on angelfish Rich Pyle on this fish... it's kind of cool to get him excited of all people... :)... Rich's "guess" as he called it, is xanthometapon/imperator... and he agreed that we'll have to wait to see how it pans out...

I also sent him photos of another amazing angelfish I got that also got him excited... coming in a thread hopefully tonight... :)

Ohh you got to stop teasing us!!!;)

I was going around to a bunch of LFS's yesterday and one had a juvie angel that looked quite a lot llike your's john. I have no idea where it was from but they had it abeled as a juvi emp. However it lacked all the brown/orange that your fish has. it did have all the irregular stripeing and splotches.

So John, where is this other exciting angelfish.......

There are two more actually... and I'll post about them tonight!:)

Sweet, Rich Pyle had the same guess as me emperor/blueface! Keep it health and thriving (which I know you will) and continue to post progress pics.

P.S. Hey why do you gotta torment me with the "I post a thread tonight" stuff ;)

P.P.S. I just looked on LiveAquaria at the Blueface, Emperor, and Koran Angelfish juvi pics and I am still pretty sure its a Imperator/xanthometopon (Emperor/BlueFace)

P.P.P.S. Just Imaging how crazy a Emp/blueface is gonna look as a 12inch adult! :eek1: :D

Going by just the photos I can see that postulation... and as I said it's a mix of some of those three species, but having stared at this fish so much in person I see semicirculatus in it more and more... I would prefer it to be a blueface/emp hybrid... as that would be sweet... but I'd be surprised (pleasantly) if it didn't have koran in it... but it is what it is, and I'm just excited to see how it grows...

Sorry about making you wait on the other two... but they're worth it... trust me... :)

John

Your killing us John!!! I can't even fathom what a emp/BF hybrid would look like. I don't even know how two fish like that would hybrid!

What makes you see Koran, is it its personality? Or is it something else? I also Hope its 50% Emperor, 50% Blueface, and 0% Koran.

Its ok, I guess its just delayed gratification ( Thats what I'm telling myself :p ;) )

It is crazy... if you told me to give you a list of cool Pomacanthus hybrid possibilities, emp/blueface would be on my short list... this fish will go through life with a silver spoon in her mouth... I'm nervous thinking about which system to put her in... she'll be in QT for at least a few more weeks yet, as I've only had her about nine days now...

Sounds like its gonna have THEE best life a captive fish can have. When I was on LiveAquaria thinking about what kind of Hybrids would be cool Emp/Blueface definitely came to mind. Heck with your skills and knowledge about angelfish, I think you should try to breed a emperor and a blueface together, but when the time comes that I ask for one of the babies you will sell a baby to me for cheap because I gave you the idea. :)

I don't know why everyone is dogging the koran, is it their price? I think korans are cool fish.

And John you called P. sexstriatus an ugly duckling... man.

It's really hard for me to put my finger on it... it's really just my instinct... Having owned Pomacanthus species for twenty years now, and having admired them for longer since I was a young kid, and having seen so many through the years... it's become instinct. As I said earlier if I look at this fish without concentrating on details, I think Koran... Perhaps it is the blueface/emp mix that results in throwing my instinct off... again it's hard to explain, but it is sort of like... for example... how do you know your sister is your sister? You can describe her characteristics, but those would be shared by many other people... you just look at her and know... that's my sister! That may sound like a weird example, but it fits...

The angel in question looks a lot like this one from google with respects to the face and brown with dots:

Hey Dan, the fish you posted is clearly semicirculatus... the differences we are talking about are very subtle of course, like seeing the "Euxiphipops" in the face of my fish... the "brown with dots" would be input from xanthometopon...

Tim, trust me... I would never dog any angelfish... if I were independently very wealthy I would have angelfish aquarium displaying every known species I collected myself from around the world... korans as adults have a relatively "blank canvas" compared to the other two species in question, and therefore it would be quite exciting to see what the hybrid grew into... just my preference of course, and we all have them... I respect yours and expect the same in return. If preferring one over the other means "dogging" the koran, then so be it! :) On a side note, the koran was my first Pomacanthus (and one of my first angels), just over 20 years ago when I was 11! I mentioned sextriatus as the "ugly duckling" because most people only know the other two Euxiphipops, and despite them being just as common in the wild with similar distribution the industry will sell the two "prettier" Euxiphipops by over ten or twenty to one. I have many "ugly ducklings" I prefer over the pretty ones, including my mutant scopas and grey and white Zebrasoma xanthurum... Oh, and I never dog stuff because of its price... as I always say... get the fish that excite YOU... not other people... and many of the fish that have excited me the most have been cheap (like this little girl)!

That makes sense, but I still hope its emp/blueface. Don't get me wrong I think the Koran is a very beautiful fish, but I just think that a emp/blueface would be cooler.

Oh and what do you think about my idea?

I wasn't saying I preferred the koran or sextriatus, I was just poking fun :) but for the record the sextriatus is one of my favs. My favorite pomacanthus though is the blue ring. I saw a huge one at a shop when I was younger and ever since... also we had a very large one at the LFS I worked at over the summer in our 1500 gal. display so caring for it was cool. It was the boss of the tank over a majestic, french, and large naso tang. There were other fish but those were the big boys.
