(Another) DIY LED Build - Linear Design

hey Ceaser! and company!
I have not word how to thank you for this thread, I have not electrical tendencies till I read this thread...LOL
NOW anytime you start an arduino thread(Ihope soon ) please be simple for people like me ....hahahah
thanks to all of you guys

Cesar, You have 50%Blue50% Cool Wht, is there a procedure to acclimate the light when convert to LEDs ( dimming, timing,..)?

Please explaine more. Are you referring to the images i post earlier having 50% blue and the same in white? Those are just for comparison so that people will see the difference in light with respect to different percentage.

Also, if I understand your question. I ran my lights for almost two week at these levels. I was afraid that i might put too much light from an un-tested (no experience) lights...

I am just curious that when you turn on the light the first time, do you have any precaution control so that you don't have too much light or so...

Yes, I have dimmable drivers... so i just set my pot to 350ma on the blues and 500ma on the whites. and slowly ramping it up every 4 days or so....

Hey, Katchup will you please do me another favor?
I am setting up a frag tank, (24"x24"x11")
I am thinking 12 Whites and 12 Blues.
80* optics on the whites and 60* optics on the blues, how high would the fixture need to be?
the lights will alternate. W-B-W-B-W-B-W-B etc.

Great thread! Thank you guys for building and answering so many questions. I appologize if you have already answered a similiar question. I am also in the process of setting up a frag tank 48"x24"x11 inches deep. I think I have the courage now, do to this thread, to start an LED build. So it's a frag tank and I want max growth and color but need to minimize cost. ( don't recomend PC's ha) If I only need good PAR down 11" how far apart could I place the LEDS and still get the coverage, color and PAR I need. Could you place the LED's 6" apart on a row? That way each row would only need 7 LED's. Then place the rows 6" apart. This would only require 3 rows to light my Frag tank. Row 1 and row 3 would have the first light 6" from the end, then every 6 inches. Row 2 the first bulb would start at 9" from the end then the next bulb 6" down and so on.... Wish I could draw this out... I would not use any optics to get maximum spread of light. Just thought maybe I could get by with a lot less LED's since I only need coverage down 11 inches. Does this sound reasonable, or are they way to far apart? Also thought I could dim row one for zoas, and turn up row 3 for SPS. Your thoughts and recommendations are appreciated.

IMHO 6 inches will be to far apart. Maybe 4, but no one that I know of has done any research into this.

You could always order some and then move the bars closer to together if needed. You may end up with a 1/2 lit frag tank, but you can always order more LEDs.

I haven't been able to find anything either. My thought is if I only need par down 11 inches, I wouldn't use any optics to get the most spread, and I could lower the LED's down to the top of the tank if needed for higher par.... And good point I could always put the bars closer and this would almost be like having a light every 3 inches.... Thanks for the response.

At siz inches if you lower the bars you may find that you get dark spots at the top. I think you are going to have to order some and play. Also remember that LEDs have different spread angles so without telling us your LEDs we are sort of guessing too :) or did I miss that.

Thanks Fishman56, I Was looking at the kits at Rapid LED, Probably the Cree XP-G R5 and the Cree Royal Blue XR-E's. But you understand my issue. I don't think for an 11" deep frag tank I need/should follow 1 LED ever 3 inches.... You are correct I could not hang it two low or it would cause dark spots. What I am trying to figure out is if I placed LED's 6" apart how high would I have to raise them to get full coverage at the top and at that height would I get the PAR at the bottom I need for growth and color.

I am still working on PAR and lenses a very enlightening subject :). I think my advice is by some and try it. 6 inches at 11 should spread ok with those LEDs, but I have no idea on PAR.

Here's a quickie for you...
