any "old time" SPS folks still visit this forum?

I guess I sort of count as old time for SPS: the live rock of my 1988 reef tank had an encrusting Montipora that did well. But I didn't introduce it intentionally. At that time LFS was the source of all inverts and they only had softies and LPS, so that's what I had in my tanks. For aquarium keeping in general, I started FW in the 60s with the slate bottom steel rim things that you had to recaulk every few years.

Re: Thiel, my take is that at that time (80s) he was heavily influenced by German FW planted tanks, especially "Horst und Horst", the founders of Dupla. I had no idea he (Thiel) was still around and releasing another book no less?

These two statements are great!!

I went back and forth here with a newer member about dwell time and gave up no point really LOL. People think we are here to argue when in fact after having a dozen or so skimmer I feel i know enough to speak about skimmer functions and dwell times and try to bring attention to a newer member about a functional skimmer and it's dwell time. I'm not here to argue this is why most of my posts stay to a minimum.

Yup!:strange:

Who thought when they started you would see frags the size of a fingernail sell for $100 or more and would be called high end sps.

Who would have thought they would be selling bottled water for a buck a bottle?

Re: Thiel, my take is that at that time (80s) he was heavily influenced by German FW planted tanks,

He is alive and doing well and posting much more than I do on other forums.

I showed up on RC in 2005 but my first reef tank was in 1993. I ran 2 mercury vapor bulbs over a 60 gal tank, had a hob skimmer w/ the airstone, a hob filter.

Been keeping saltwater since 1990. Reef tank since 1993. Took a small break from 1998 to 2001. SPS since.
Always still asking questions and learning.

Hey Jim, next week I am going to start wirebrushing my props to get them ready.

As luck would have it I was up in Wisconsin last week where my boat is kept and well, there isnt much point in getting ready yet. There is 18" of ice on the bay and it got to -6 at night. The marina however is supposed to repaint both drives before spring launch.

Put the props in a bucket of zing. It may save you some elbow grease!!

Hi Gary! Lost most of my SPS last year following a power outage but my big tank is still going. Converting over to LEDs and restocking. PS I still have a favia brain growing I bought in 2000. Not SPS but clearly a survivor!

Its funny, I ran into someone who used to be in the local club 20+ years ago. I asked him why I haven't seen him online in years, and the response was similar to some responses here. Pre-"internets" information was mainly acquired locally, then Usenet groups allowed for hobby-wide exchange of ideas (I still think more useful information was passed by way of these groups than any other), now websites such as our RC allow hobbyists to be "seasoned" within an hour.

I wish there were more "experimenters". I remember large groups of hobbyists each putting a cup of LS in a holding tank, then weeks later each taking a cup out. It was fun. Now you don't need sand, and they'd probably call you an idiot for such an idea :(

I love seeing what the newer generation to this hobby has done, ex: nano tanks....."you can't have a saltwater tank less than 55g, and get off my lawn!!!" But at the same time I miss the.....civil?.....exchange of ideas; less dogmatic exchange.

I have a one ounce Nano, with a macro algae problem, does that count?

Still around. Over 10 years now at least I don't remember when I first joined (would have to dig up the banished account). I used to really like to experiment but these days I would rather just watch my corals grow and complain about my acros hitting the glass to friends ;)

I think it's important to keep the dialogue going and stay in touch with new trends while a lot of things we did in the past were just scratching the surface on keeping animals alive these days people are doing so and growing corals and maintaining colours on corals that were very difficult in the past.

It's important to keep re-evaluating what we are doing and adapt as needed if it will benefit our tank. In a hobby like this, the old way isn't necessarily the best way.
