Anybody have (very) deep pockets?

For that price you can almost fly to Australia and have a pair transshipped back :) They go for about $150 a pair here on the West Coast. By the time they get to Wisconsin they must go up in value :)

I got really deep pockets.....Too bad they're empty.LOL Nice fish, but IMO no fish is worth that much.

Where? That's less than for one fish at a Wholesaler right now on the West Coast.

$80 at Tong's in Fountain Valley. They normally have them in stock at this time of year, but to be honest I haven't been there in a couple of weeks. I have purchased 10 at that price in the past over several years. Maybe they have gone up? I can't say. All I know is that LAX is the low price point in the country, and the farther you get from the airport the more things cost. Colored giganteas at Tong's last weekend for $80 (purple and green) and $90 (for the blue) while they were selling on online sites for $200 or more. Won't be the first time someone has contacted me through this site and I have hooked them up directly with the store to have something shipped out at their "retail" price. BTW - they had a mertensii there as well for $80.

Is anybody breeding them (not necessarily somebody from the forum, but just anyone)? If somebody bought a $1,000 pair off DD in less than 24 hours, there's obviously a market...

It appears they are being bred, but very early in the process and very limited availability. The captive-raised fish I saw had notable (to me) defects similar to when people first started captive-breeding other clown species 20 years ago or so.

It should be noted, these are not rare clowns in the wild. Their availability is limited because they are collected off the coast of Australia, and fish collecting in Australia is highly regulated. The limited number of collectors would rather spend their time collecting expensive angels than cheap clowns (according to the collector I spoke with). Also, these are semi-tropical fish that are difficult to collect in the winter (in the southern hemisphere) so you typically only see them a few months out of the year. However they are not rare, nor are they difficult to collect (unlike A. mccullochi).

This was at the airport, that is why it surprised me.

Thanks, I've been there before. Do they still have that "picasso" style maroon.

SA (Sustainable Aquatics) is breeding them and as BonsaiNut stated they do not quite have full markings. Only 10% have full markings (even after a year) and the rest have broken/missing bars.

Greg, actually it's been about 4 years since Tong's or any other store here on the westcoast has been able to get latez in at prices like that. The prices of these fish have absolutely skyrocketed over the past few years. Now you will be very lucky to find a single latez available for less than 300 retail. The times have changed big time regarding this particular fish...

FWIW, I've seen them wholesale over the past two years at different wholesalers anywhere from 140 to 300 a pop...

The sad thing is, almost all of the ones that come in are massive sickly adults which probably 90% of them die at the within the first few weeks. WC juvis are incredibly hard to find.

I've seen TR juvis, however even they wholesaled from 150-200 and, sadly, the majority of them looked like deformed little freaks.

That's sad, really. Who can afford $300 clowns? Or in this case, $500 clowns? I wonder who's making all the money... it certainly doesn't cost $500 to catch and ship them.

You know Greg, I remember my jaw dropping when I first saw the dramatic price increase on a wholesaler's list a few years ago. I couldn't believe the number and had to ask to make sure it wasn't some type of typo which I was almost positive it was. Besides clarions, I've never seen any fish in this hobby experience such a dramatic price increase in such a short period of time.

With all that said, I was still willing to drop some coin for wc pair of juvi's that roam around in a nice blue gig. :D I still can't deny how much I just love these expensive little dingleberries.
