Anyone ever think about giving up and just going fish only?

I love my sps, but seems lately I've been fighting a losing battle with my favorite pieces, it's very discouraging.
How do you stay the course when it seems so overwhelming. Especially with so many beautiful fish that are not reef safe.

I couldn't do it. I don't care how nice the fish is, IMO a sw tank looks incomplete without coral. If you're having problems with your SPS then why not just go with strictly softies and LPS?

The thing is, that when everything is "right" you can sit back and relax and just enjoy it. I view any problem as temporary. I use them to learn lessons and ensure I dont take shortcuts again. For me, I have been keeping reef tanks for almost 7 years, but am reletively new to sps. I have about 10 (ranging from 4.5" colonies - 2" frags) types and have been doing well with them. There is very little work put in from me to keep these. All I dose is brs alk / calc additives as needed, add 2g rodi every 2 days, and amino acids and proteins every 2 day.

As for the non reef safe fish...heck after keeping a sps tank, think about how easy a FOWLR tank would be...I would say clear a spot at home and setup a second tank so you can enjoy both if possible

SPS are hard. If you expect nothing but success they may not be for you.
Then there are the others that are actually in it for the challenge and don't miss a beat when something goes south.

I just dont have the time to keep up with the tank anymore. Between the job, wife, kid and other things my tank is not looking so good. Luckly all my sps are doing great but algae is an issue.

After traveling for work for over a year and seeing my tank suffer for the last 3 months I finally shut it down two months ago. Just had too much else to do and got tired of the frustration of not being around to see it. This was after 5 years straight and moving about half a dozen times due to school and work, I just didn't want to move it again. The first few weeks were great not having to worry about it but now I want another tank. That being said I spend more time on reef central than before and have the time to fully plan my new tank. It's going to be smaller, like 30-40g, fewer fish and probably only gobies. So breaks are good but you'll probably get the bug again. Maybe fowlr for your main tank and a smaller coral only tank is your answer. I find the 20-40g size easiest to maintain and most fish only tanks only need service every 2-4weeks and a scoop of food daily.

After a tank crash and lost over 50 high end SPS I went fish only while getting the tank parameters back in order. Now I'm back in and starting to acquire my next collection.

I just wish they came out with a controller that monitors alk, Mg, Po4, No3 etc. it would make this hobby a bit easier.

Queen Angelfish can be kept with SPS but they need a large aquarium.
Many Triggers and Butterflyfishes can be kept with SPS.
Obligate corallivores would be a legit excuse to not keep certain fishes with SPS.

FO is definitely less demanding. Why don't you try it?
If you ever want the challenges of growing SPS you could always come back.

Keep at it. Becoming a successful SPS keeper takes a lot of time, but once the skill is learned and wisdom gained, you have it for life. There's nothing as cool as a full blown SPS aquarium, teeming with fish!

Never, I either go all out or no tank at all. I will leave this hobby the day I get AEFW.

LOL AEFW been there done that, easy to deal with. IME pests have been a minor speed bump in the road. Time, money and energy are my issues these days.
