Me and my family are going to rocky point in a couple weeks (yea..yet another freakin vacation lol) and i've never been there, so i was just wondering if there's any cool stuff for this hobby down there? Anything that i should take advantage of low prices on?

I'm prolly gonna go on a boat thing to Bird Island, and then we're (we're as in "me" lol) gonna go scuba diving or snorkleing...i'd rather go diving, but i've never done it before (or snorkeling for that matter) and there's sposed to be a ton of sea lions swimming around you...the thought of those big guys w/large pointy teeth swimming around me has me reconsidering if i wanna do that tho lol...

so ya, i was just wondering if theres some cool stuff down there for aquariums

thanks
mike

I havent been there in along time but I do remember we went to J.J.'s Cantina I think thats what its called. we were rock fliping and seen a bunch of creatures!!

You need to go fishing, the trigger and sea bass are amazing! We had 6 guys on a little boat out in the middle of the ocean and I was expecting to just sit out there for 4 hours doing nothing but sure enough we all caught around 20 fish each!

I was there about a month ago and at low tide ya can find a ton of small hermit crabs and snails on the beach. not sure how legal it would be to bring em back or if you would want to put them in your tank.

fubaga...ya i had seen where they had tide pools...i proly wouldnt bring back any live hermits or anything (unless i found something way cool) but i'd prolly get a ton of empty shells since aquarium arts charges money for theirs lol..

chincheck...yes i was hoping to go fishing....the only time i've even gone sea fishing was in san diego about 10 years ago...got sea sick too lol.

thanks for those links. our computer shows that we've already been to those sites, so my dad must have been looking into them lol...i think we're renting a house thats about 5 ft. from the ocean from a guy here in the valley...at least thats what i heard last.

truthdesigns....rockflipping is also in my plans lol..any chance they have tarantulas there? i've been wanting one for a while but we dont get them around my house, and i'm certainly not gonna go to petco and pay 40 bucks for something that other people in the vally find in their house on regular basis lol.

thanks all

Now here is a topic I am an expert on! Ive been going down there about 3-4 times/year for 27 years (since I was born). The place has changed A LOT!!! Playa elegante and Playa de Oro (Trailer parks) have a more rocky beach where you can flip rocks over and find cool stuff such as brittle stars, shrimp, crabs, hermits, and if youre lucky Octopus. Cholla Bay is great for wading in knee high water and finding Sand dollar skeletons, clams, mussels, Octopus, Large Blue crabs (careful...theyre huge)...plan on walking a lot. Cholla Bay is also home to JJs Cantina as mentioned above...a very old establishment that is popular with the "older" crowd. If youre looking to go where the crowd is, hit Mannys beach club... Just simply ask just about anyone down there the names of these places and theyll tell you how to get there. The other beach with all the hotels/resorts is Sandy Beach. This beach is better for swimming and hanging out because the sand is much finer (softer) and there arent as many reefs/rocks to run into. The other side of the point (Playa elegante and de oro) has a more shelly beach, many more rocks, and tide pools. There is also a museum and a small aquarium down there...I forgot the name of it, but it is on the road toward Las Conchas. It was interesting, but dont expect to see 1000 gallon aquariums and fancy setups...its more informative and educational. As for snorkeling, if you do it from the beach, you wont see too much (some small fish...thats about it)...Ive never scuba dived there, but have heard mixed opinions on it. If youre in a boat, keep a lookout for dolphins...they like to follow the boats and theyre just plain cool. Last but not least...have yourself a Banana Boat ride off the beach for $5...its pretty fun :) Let us know how the trip was...Not too many people go there this time of year...it will be very hot and humid, so be forwarned. Best time to go is Oct-Nov and Spring time. Be safe...have fun

austan...thanks for the suggestion. I usually dont get motion sickness..the only times i ever have been was on that boat ride, and on the ghost rider at knottsberry farms (freakin roller costers!!) I'm not really sure if that stuff worked the last time i took it, but i'll take some nonetheless

Scibbity...thanks for all the info! I'll have to check out that aquarium there too...to be honest, i like the smaller tanks at aquariums better than the huge ones, simply because they always choose to put rather ugly fish in them lol...all the cool ones are smaller (well...if you can call a trigger/tang smaller...but you know what i mean..) I'm deffinately going to go to the tidepools...i'll prolly come home w/about 8000 hermit shells too lol.

and the snorkeling thing... I think its something w/a guide or someone...they take us to an island and throw us in the water lol..and ya they say there are dolphins that follow the boat the whole way, and then the island has about 3500 sea lions lol...that sa lot! The compair it to something you would see at the galapagos (spelling..ya ya..)

i know its gonna be hot there...but it is here too lol...and as far as humidity...it cant be worse than nicaragua (90% for the whole trip...and about 90 degrees too) and i survived that! lol

thanks all
mike

Look into the museum/aquarium...its been a long time (10+ years) since I was there and it may not even exist now..or maybe its better...who knows :) Sounds like a fun trip...enjoy it

There aquarium isn't exactly nice, its not there to educate anyone just to make money. If you do bring anything back, make sure to QT it before adding it to your system. I have a 6" brittle star that I collected roughly 2 years ago that does a great job of cleaning detritus from under the rockwork.

The aquarium was a bit of a disappointment. Algae laden, little or no lighting, livestock to big for the tanks, etc. They have a couple of sealions you can feed and a tank of sea turtles you also can feed. It was interesting, but don't expect to much.

I was down there two months ago and I took my family to the public aquarium, its called the CET MAR. I took pictures and short video clips. I will post them later tonight.

I was down there in MArch and had a lot of fun playing in the tide pools. Lots of brittle and serpent stars. I found some cool shrimp, lot's of different fish, urchins, crabs, all kinds of fun stuff really. I also went fishing while I was there and caught about a 10 lb trigger. I love going down there and would like to go again sometime soon. It would be fun to put together a frag/dms field trip and go tide pool hopping.

Well..I think I was about 12 when I went to the Museum/Aquarium and dont remember it much...in fact, I dont even remember the aquarium at all...just the museum. Much more fun stuff to do in RP though... Coronas, Dos Equis, Pacifico all seem to taste so much better there :)

That would be fun, unfortunatly most of the camping grounds are turning into condos soon

The trigger was delicious wasn't it? ;)

what type of brittle stars would i find down there? or are there only one kind? not to familiar w/them, but i need something besides my nassarius snails in the sand...
anyways, i'm pretty sure we're staying at some guys house down there...he lives here in the valley, but he rents his house out for people like....my family lol.

here's the link to the pics and video of the CET MAR aquarium I said I'd post.

Like others have said already, fishing is a lot of fun down there. You can charter a boat and guide for around $35 a person and you'll go out for hours and be constantly catching fish. The guide will bait and unhook all your catches too. He will clean all the fish you want to keep. We caught trigger, sea bass, rock bass, sea trout, sea catfish, and I kept catching these huge black and golden colored jawfish. It was a lot of fun.

Just a note. During the Veterans day weekend in Nov is the Rocky Point Motorcycle Rally, a get together for charity. The hotels are usually all full and the town packed with bikers so plan accordingly. The rally is great fun, but if you are looking for a quiet weekend....this would not be the time to go.
