aquamaxx ConeS CO 1 skimmer review

So I lowered my skimmer and I'm still getting water in the silencer even after adding the o ring and wrapping around it with Teflon tape. The skimmer doesn't seem to work well with water within the silencer chamber.

Would it affect it if I possibly put silicone around the bottom of the silencer to seal it and prevent water from going in it? If I were to need to remove it I could always cut the silicone off with a razor blade.

I think it's too low. My silencer is about 3/4" above my waterline and you saw the pics in previous post. Have you given it time to break in? Have you dialed the knob to let max amount of flow(counterclockwise I think as clockwise closes it). Check the bubbles inside the chamber, they should be super tiny and rising below the collection cup neck and more frothy going up

The bubbles seem to be very fine. It's been running for about 3-4 months I think. When I leave it fully open nothing goes up the the cup.

what's the largest tank you guys would run the cones co1 on? I have a 120g with 2 tangs (Yellow and Blue hippo), a pair of hooded wrasse, a pair of black clowns, a sandsifting goby, and mandarin goby.

I was getting water in my silencer also. I broke the screw holding it in place trying to remove it so I made a slight mode.

Cut most of the screw off to seal the hole in the bottom. Then cut a 1" PVC coupling in half and glued it in place. I also glued the top to the silencer. Skimmer is working fine and no water in the silencer.

Wow! Great job and looks nice too. So the silencer sleeve just press fits into the PVC coupling?

Very innovative McGyver(-;

Should be fine with silicone. You could also just pull the air hose off the bottom of the silencer and run it out of the water. It really doesn't make much noise, but then again my cabinet is insulated with sound foam. I actually don't really need the silencer except to hold the hose verticle.

That's where mine came from. This little skimmer is great. I wish they run special on the 3 and I would sell my pov 3 reef octo. It does add a little hum to my stand. Anybody get rid of the hum.

My CO-2 was annoyingly loud, even with a pad underneath. I sent a video to the vendor that I purchased from and they agreed that it was louder than it should be. Sent the pump back for inspection and possible fix/replacement under warranty.

Anyone running a CO-1 in 8" of water?

I heard from Aquamaxx that it will perform fine, but that it may be louder since the output is at 9.5" and will be a small waterfall.

Anyone have a picture of the CO-1 with a ruler next to it? Just to get an idea of how high things are with the output, bubble plate, and stuff.

Hi All,

Would this skimmer be an overkill for a 25g nano tank running bio pellets. I would be running the exit from the reef dynamics recirculating reactor into the skimmer input.

The other option would be the WS-1 model, but prefer to go with a cone skimmer.

Also can someone advise the total height of the skimmer collection cup, thank you.

Sounds like an awesome skimmer and well worth the $$$.

Cheers

The water level in my sump is 8 3/4" - 9". High enough so no output splashing sound and low enough so no water gets in my silencer.
Tried 8" water level first, and too much output splashing sound.
Seems I've hit the sweet spot, and skimmer is preforming very well.

reeftivo-didn't you run the Warner Marine MF121 for a while? If so, how do you compare the two?
Mine's now a backup skimmer. Guess John has gotten out of the skimmer business.

Yeah, I get splashing at 8.5"

yes I did. still have it in the garage.

the MF121 is a good skimmer but the eden pumps are junk IMO. after a went through 2 edens, I mesh modded a sicce 2.0 to it and it worked, but the air/water balance was off and couldn't get it to pull dark skimmate after that. It's been shelved ever since. I ran the tunze again shortly after that, then the CO1. The CO1 produces much more concentrated skimmate on my system than the WM did on its best day.

After the CO1 I never looked back. I was always looking at the next best thing just because I like to tinker and see skimmers in action but the CO1 has kind of made skimming boring for me because it is so consistent. I know exactly what I'll get from it!

I think that the flood of dirt cheap, decent performers from Asia or his collaboration with Skimz had a bit to do with John Warner moving away from skimmers. Who knows though? He has gone and come back before.

whats your NET volume?

I think it will work since you are using pellets and there should be plenty of mulm to pull out, but the neck is a little big for that size tank. I assume you are running a sump since you're looking at this skimmer. what's your sump volume and DT stocking level?

I believe the cup height from the collar is 7 inches but I can double check for you when I get home from work. The total height of the skimmer is just a hair under 20" and the collection cup is a twist off, so you only need about a half inch clearance to lift it off.

The display tank is 12.5G and the sump is also 12.5g. Net volume would be approx 20G, maybe slightly less. Stocking level is light, mainly SPS and a few LPS. 3 small fish.

Thanks for your help, maybe the WS1 would be more suited to my needs?

Cheers
