aquamaxx ConeS CO 1 skimmer review

View attachment 311065
I have had my skimmer running at this level for about 2 weeks. The red line is the where the turbulent water stops and small bubbles start. I just recently raised it up about a 1/4", so it is about 3/4" below the collar now. This is about 4 days worth of skimmate. I run a filter sock and was wondering if this looks about right for the amount of skimmate??

close it a full turn then monitor for 24 hrs. may be a bit low for your load. The concentrate looks nice though but you can go higher.

Aquamaxx ConeS CO 2 is good for 90G+30G sump?
Is there any other better skimmer for the same price?

I don't thinks so price wise!

the CO-2 would shred on that system.

the ohmega 150 is close in price, but draws too much air IMO and reviews indicate it is very difficult to tune.

The JNS U series is like the Aquamaxx EM series and they are very affordable (even cheaper than AM). I have no experience with those but if they perform like the AM series then that would be another next best option.

The other options like ATB (840), Reef Dynamics (135 or 135E), Life Reef vs-24 series (SVS3 or VS3) would be great too but are big dinero $$$

+600 bucks

I have an EM 300 on a 120 and it's the best skimmer I had. It performed better than the ATB 1050 but in all fairness the ATB may have been oversized for that tank.

Is it better to keep the water level low in the skimmer, or to keep the water level a little higher for this skimmer? I have been trying to adjust the skimmer for the last couple of months with the bubble line right at the neck of the skimmer where the collection cup attaches and I have not been getting a lot of skimmate. I have the skimmer in 9'' of water in the sump.

it depends on your system size and stocking levels.

what size display and what animals do you keep?

Also, is 9 inches the deepest you can run it or is there some wiggle room?

if you are running it on the leeMar in your signature then I would say 9.5 inches unless you are stocked really heavily.

Several members here have shown that 8.5 works well for them but they had larger systems. I would start at 9 and see where you're at after several days. 9 inch depth will allow for better tuning since the stand pipe should be a bit more open.

I started mine at 9.25 inches and graduated to 9.5 to find me sweet spot. I have tried mine at 10 inches and 8.5 inches. my best results were at 9.5 to 9.75.

Yeah, it's on the 40g leemar in my sig. I can't run the skimmer any lower or the silencer fills with water - I have tried o-rings and teflon tape but water still gets in. The water level is directly below plastic ring that holds the silencer on the skimmer.

The tank has 7 fish in it and is a SPS dominant system that I run with heavy feedings and gfo/gac. Nutrients are pretty low atm.

would you be willing to just pull the hose from the base of the silencer? Its really not that loud.

I disconnected mine and just run it above the surface. The reason I did this is because I run water through the line a couple times a week and I don't like my skimmer going idle for 15 minutes when I would put my hands in the sump to disconnect it.

your system is the size of mine +/- the sump volume. My overflow is big, so my 39 DT without it is just over 40g (+another 15 for sump).

With only your fish count you're heavier stocked than me, so you should be getting descent skimmate. Go to 9.5 if possible and remember dont fiddle between adjustments and let it settle in for a day after each tweek.

set your air /water line a half inch to 1 inch below the flange the silencer is on. After it settles in, your foam head should be above the collar where the cup mounts.

Just got a used co-2 and having a problem
The issue is the pump and the bracket, not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but it makes a ton of noise, if I put a tic of pressure on the top of the bracket it gets much quieter. Is there another little piece, or a trick I'm missing?

Have it running in vinegar now, looks like it will be great if I can fix the noise.
Thanks for the time,
Joel

Also own a co-1, very pleased and it's silent.

So your saying I should set the bubble line really low in the skimmer?

Look at steveg's pic in post 787.
I'm referring to the air/water line. skimmer will have 3 zones. Lower turbulent zone separated by a fairly fine line of more uniform bubbles rising above that. The line in red on his post is the air water line. That's what I'm referring to. That line should be around 1/2 to 1 inch from the white collar the cup screws onto. Hope that helps

I'm pretty sure there is supposed to be an hour glass looking piece of acrylic with a screw that is now included with the external coneS series. I believe that goes horizontal between the two vertical pump plates to minimize vibration.
