Has anyone make an external G3 with recirculating and gate valve mods, I don't have any room to accomendate the extra length needed for recirculating mod. Would it be leak proof, if I follow the exact same mod as recommended in this http://www.asmskimmer.com/mod2.htm

i have mine ran externally. you have to use silicone to seal the rubber seal, and then it will not leak, as long as it doesn't overflow. its not too bad really. good luck

adnup

I got mine Friday and it was in the sump that night. It started pulling green goop last night so figure about 48 hours after you put it in.

About 6 months ago we tested unmod G2 and G3 at different tank levels starting at 11 inches deep. We got the best results on both skimmers at 8" or less.
We moved the skimmers up 1/2" a week. We did not acually have a measurement that we could take other then eye balling the results but both skimmers did much better as we reduced the depth of the water. 8" or even less showed a mark improvement.
Our guess was that it is easier to pull air into the skimmer when the pump is not so deep.

well, mine the key wasn't 11, it had to be 13" for my g3.
17" baffle, 4" tall tupperware containers it sits on.

anything under 11" just didnt' cut it for me.

I guess this means that people need to test different water levels. Mods, SPG and other factors could come into play with setting the skimmer at the correct water depth. I got almost nothing at 13" but a lot at 8" and you got just the opposite. It always amazes me how dissimilar reef tanks can be,

very true mike. Kind of baffling, maybe i'm just an oddball.
could be how pump is mounted too.
but initially when it was lower, i had it mounted standard asm/euro style. switched deltec style and was better.. made it deeper, and better again.. whether pump was turned input facing up or input facing down didn't seem to make much diff though which you'd think with the change in height diff that would dramatically affect it.

FYI-
I had set up the gate valve mod set up on my G3 the B&E way and for 2 months I had very erratic performance. The G3 would skim well for a day or 2 and then overflow like mad. It was constant tinkering...
Then I switched the mod to the way ASM has it on their website. I just had to shorten the very first piece of pipe that connects the gate valve to the ASM outtube so the gate valve is practically sitting right on the outtube.
The difference is amazing! It performs 200% better now, and has not gone crazy at all. I read on this forum that someone else had the same problem with the B&E mod and that they thought it created too much back pressure or something. I am not sure if that is the case, but either way I don't think that set up is nearly as efficient as the regular ASM way...

This is the ASM way:

This is the ASM way:

Here is the way ASM has it and this worked great for me...if its too tall for a G3, instead of using the alternate configuration they have just cut the piece of PVC that comes out of the gate valve an inch or two shorter than what is in the pic...make it short enough so you can barely see that piece...like you cannot see the piece of PVC that is below the gate valve connecting it to the ASM's outtube:

B&E style. So far it has worked well for me.

I have read this thread and decided to switch my skimmer from ETSS 500 to a G4+. I will do all of the mods as well. Anyone have luck running this skimmer external? I think that with all the mods it will work.
