ASM Skimmer Club!

i also thought maybe that it was skimming everything so i put my hob on when it quits and hob still skims like it used to lol go figure so i raise the tube all the way to bottom of collection cup well see if that helps

I run my G2 so that the top of the foam is about 1" to 1/4" from the top of the collection cup inner tube. If I run the foam near the bottom of the inner tube, it really doesn't fill the cup, it just coats the inner tube with gunk. Try raising the outlet so that the foam is pretty high up the inner tube. Just keep checking it in the beginning, cause you don't want it filling and overflowing. Once you find your setting, it should remain stable as long as the water level in the skimmer chamber is level. I usually pull about 2" a week with the higher setting and less than 1/4" with the lower setting. HTH

Running G4+ with gate an mesh mods. Sedra 9000. My pump is just too loud. It's under display in enclosed cabinet and I can always hear an annoying hum....

Any suggestions ?

Thxs

I tried several times before getting the mesh mod balanced. Depending on how u tied it down, using zips i imagine, take a close look at the wheel. See if the zips are same size after clipping and placed directlt across from each other.
I found that using 4 ties, going outwards around the outside of the wheel worked well and held the enkamat better. There is plenty of clearance to do it that way.
Hope this helps

I'll take a look at my ties again...

I am really thinking of getting a different pump, Eheim or Tunze...

Anyone done this ?

Bourbeaue I am having the same problem. The only difference is that my mesh mod got ruined over time, so I am in need of a change. I never really had any complaints about the sedra 9000, but if I am going to buy another pump it seems like there are better models now. My pump still runs but is really loud and I would have to order enkamat.

I really would like to try a Sicce psk-1000 but I haven't heard anyone say anything good about these pumps on a ASM G4 body. Any input from anyone who has tried different pumps would be great.

I have the ASM G4, and although currently still running both Sedra pumps, I am also looking for the same information because I would like to go with a sicce or some other pump when the time comes for replacement.

Ive heard the Sicce pumps are noisy so Im not sure you are buying yourself anything. that being said, I had the G4XX which the difference is the pump and the distance to the inlet hole in the body. That comes with the Sedra 15000. The Sedra 15000 is an inch+ higher, it can be used on the G4 but you would need to raise up the body of the G4a couple inches to line up with the hole. The Sedra 15000 was quite and again this is once I got the mesh mod and ties balanced out perfectly. No noise and no distinguishable vibration. I had the G4XX modded with the gate valve, the mesh wheel and the input line on the inside had a 90 degree elbow then a short piece of 1" pvc that went to a t pointed at the walls. I found that T helped greatly reducing turbulence and allowing more proteins to be exported due to that and more contact time. The skimmer worked great like that.

Interesting on the 15000. I would have thought it would have been even louder than the 9000... I tried a SICCE 2500 a while back and IT IS LOUD ! Don't know if the psk-1000 is any different. I would stay away. I know Tunze has something they call the hydrofamer silence. If the nale is any indication...

Also, I hear Deltec has used the Eheim 6200 on some of their high end models. Those are usually great pumps.

Anyone using anything else than Sedra on their G4 series ?

Running my first skimmer! ASM mini-G

Hey all! I've been reefing for less than 2 years, and have moved from a 28 g cube to a 65 g with a 20 gallon sump. This is my first skimmer! Woohoo! I have just installed it today. I have it in 10.25" of sump. When I have the riser pipe in the lowest setting and plug in, the water level rises to overflow, filling the skimmer cup with water. Currently I have taken the riser tube out, just to 'break in' the skimmer. Will I have to rise the skimmer a couple of inches off the bottom? I've seen 6 - 10" recommended for the mini G, and I'm a little over 10"

Thanks!
David

I just ordered the sicce psk-1000 for my asm g4. I plan to build my own volute. I will let you know it compares to the sedra 9000

Thanks all, I figured it out myself!!!! Some club! As Groucho Marx once said, " I'd never join any club that would have me as a member!" lol

Thanks Robert! I have nothing to gauge it by, my first skimmer. Though, when I asked my wife if she could hear it, she said, "I can't hear it over the other noise." It was so deadpan, I'm still laughing! It's collecting already, just have to adjust to concentrate the skimmate . Very happy so far.

The foam in my collection cup is overflowing out of my G1. There are four "spouts" of foam coming out of the spot where the four tabs lock the lid on. I don't have any pictures, but I can take some. Is there a way to get the top to lock down tighter?

I experienced same issue until i drilled bottom and put a drain in to keep the level in the cup at zero. If your cup is collecting and is half full there isnt as much space for the foam to fall to.

I havent tried it but I would imagine cutting a gasket of some material to sit under the cup would work, or a think o ring if you can match one up.

Another thought, I remember mine didnt do that in the begining so it may be that the plastic tabs have some wear on them now keeping the lid from being as tight as it used to be. You could try playing around with some two part epoxy on the tabs ( liquid ) but very small amount that you can sand down to make the tab just slightly thicker to pull the lid tighter...... GL

Id raise it up a couple inches. When it breaks in try it in that depth again.

Also I found that by installing a 90 deg PVC elbow inside pointed down then a small piece of pvc to connect to a T pointed at the sides works great. The bubbles get more contact time being disbursed lower in the body adn teh bubbles arent blasting against sides since it is now split off into two directions. The pump isnt pushing quite ( slightly less ) as much water through due to the bend and lower disbursement. While that sounds like it might be counter productive I actually had my G4XX kicking butt like this, better than stock for sure, so slowing down the flow and redirecting it lower in body was actually quite productive.

Happen to have a pic?

Thanks

Thanks Captain! IT seems to be collecting pretty good now, I'd say 0.25" to 0.5" a day. I don't have a huge bioload. I assume that is why I'm getting tan skimmate and not the coffee-colored I have seen in some pictures! I may try your alteration at some point. When I break it down to clean I'll have a look...
Thanks for your suggestion and help!
David:)
