ASM Skimmer Club!

That second picture is mine and I changed it to be more like the first picture but I left out the extra pipe coming out of the top of the tee... the benifit to having the tee after the ball valve is that in the case of more flow going through the skimmer like mc-cro said it will just flow over the tee and not flood the reservoir, at least that is how I understand it.

You can kinda see it in these pictures.

I have had my G3 for over 5 years now, have tried several different ways of running the gate. the best I have found is what ASM recommended from the beginning.

Out of the skimmer riser tube put the elbow, then the gate valve, then the tee with one end pointing up, and a section of pipe that comes down and the water exits below the water level. Because the Tee is pointing up, it acts like a vent and there is no pressure build up from the exit being under water. This eliminates splashes and reduces noise. I added a small pc of filter floss to the top of the tee for more noise control.

So I've got many ideas to do on my g1 from this thread. Well a few weeks ago I did a few mods on my skimmer and now it's broken in I'm really happy with the results. I did the gate valve, recirculating, bubble plate mods. But I didn't want to drill any holes on the sides of my skimmer. So the intake for the recirculation was T'ed off of the out let tube.

.

For the bubble plate I use a broken RO filter housing that broke on me a while back. I cut off the bottom 3"s and drilled a few holes in it.

It's is the skimmater that I get on a daily bases

I redid my plumbing to include a refugium. The skimmer's output goes to the CPR 500's drip-plate, then to the skimmer's sump and to the return pump back to the tank.

I just purchased a G3 with a gate valve mod yesterday, and I'm having a problem with too much bubbles being produced and my collection cup fills up too fast with clear water. What am I doing wrong? I've tried to go to the ASM website but it takes me to Marine Solutions. Could someone please help!! I really need this skimmer on my tank asap!!

Is the gate valve wide open, or closed? How deep is the water the skimmer sits in?

Marty

eric mac,

Why do you need a bubble plate and does the water that leaves your riser tube have a lot of micro-bubbles?

The bubble plate is to slow down the turbulence in the skimmer so the bubble rise up. Not bounce abound all around. I really don't get much micro-bubbles in the exit line. I've noticed that with the bubble plate most of the micro-bubbs rise in the skimmer it's self.

Well come to find out, the gate valve mod was done half ***, and I did it right. Now it's working like a charm!! I can't believe how much crap it's skimming!! Proud to be part of the ASM Skimmer Club!

ASM gx4 GATE VALVE

ASM gx4 GATE VALVE

What I did was to add the pvc straight up, then a T and short straight piece to gate valve I purchased a pool shop, another short piece, then connect to another 90 deg elbow pointing down, another straight piece down into my water BUT this has holes drilled in sides (not many ) and one of them I used a piece of hard water line from my RODI setup sticking out about 3 inches at a 90 degree angle. On this I slide a 4" sock up the last straight piece and use this piece of hard line to hang the sock on.

This does two things for me

TOTALLY eliminates bubbles AND
any debris at all that comes out of the skimmer is caught in this last sock. I like it!

Note that at the top of the T I have nothing. This is in case the water level in sump gets too high the skimmer doesnt fill with water, it overflows out top of T!

Now, can anyone give me latest instructions to Mod the wheel?

So Im about to get my 125 up and running finally, and as part of the deal, it came with an asm g3. I know its stock standard, and Im seeing a bunch on the gate valve mod and mesh mod. Can i be directed to the build page for these ? It looks like people have done various designs here, so what is the most efficent ? Any help as I havnt even started this up yet.

Just google "ASM Skimmer Mods" that helped me also to get some ideas.
