ASM Skimmer Club!

hi i bought a g-4 skimmer recently off a guy who had no accesorys for it. It did not have the outlet sponge/foam.. Just outta curiosity is there an alternative that i can buy somewhere as opposed to the expensive oem solutions online?

thanks

use a eshopps overflow sponge. you will have to stretch it to fit over the pipe, but it works great.
i used them on an old G3 and G4.

I bought all new o-rings for my g5 from Marine Depot and they leaked terribly. Had to put the old ones back in. I am going to try another vendor. The worst was the body o-ring, it was to thin.

I just got a used g3 skimmer from a buddy. Was wondering if i can trim down the body to fit it under my stand. My stand is 24" tall... and the skimmers 25" tall. I was thinking about taking it to my local acrylic shop and have them trim 5" off the top so it will fit/have room to work with it. Is this Do-Able? I would like to run this skimmer. But if i cant i'll just sell it to another buddy.... Thanks in advance

I would measure the skimmer again. It seems like my G3 is 23 inches tall. I would measure mine just for the record, but it's in storage and I don't want to dig it out just for that.

Are you going by an actual measurement, or a specification you read somewhere?

Is this an ASM skimmer? If so which model?

It's 24'' high and 8 1/2 base diameter.
However it has 2 pump holes.

This skimmer does not look to be cut down by the previous owner.

I thought the outlet was where the foam thing is? This has two of the smaller holes, it also has 2 clips for air tubes, one on each side. I'll try to post another pick a little later today.

Here's another pic. Is the hole on the left the intake and the one on the right for output?

If this is a G3 is it modified? I cannot find a G3 that has the two small holes?

What size Sedra would I need for this guy to work properly?

Thanks

The 8-1/2 inch diameter reaction chamber makes it a G4, a G4+, or a G4x. Not sure which. If you run it in a recirculation fashion, the hole on the left in the picture would be the feed hole and you would have to drill a hole lower than the hole on the right in the picture for pump recirculation. The recirc mod takes a lower hole to suck water into the pump venturi from the reaction chamber and pump it back into the chamber through the top hole, in this manner continuously.

I've had my G3 running in my sump for 5+ years. The pump died this past weekend. I have had it not turn on right after a cleaning before, but have always been able to get it going again. This time I cannot get it going at all..... Any tips? Can I just get a pump? What pump? Thanks!!

Some pet stores carry Sedra impellers, but I think it's more rare. You'll probably have to order online. There are plenty of stores that sell them. Just google Sedra impeller and you should fine them.
