Attempting a red based magnifica

Now thats priceless! I had some custom reflectors made out of Hammertone from a club member in Tampa. They came out great and I saved a ton of money.

I picked up a bleached red base H. Mag. from Coral Corral last month. He is still bleached but eating well...he lost the red in his base but it is starting to come back. They also had a brown base with yellow tips but it was deflated.

PR - has the Corral switched out all the Solaris? I visited that store last summer while visiting the folks in Clearwater.

When I was there they were using all MH with Radium 20K on the coral tanks. I didn't see any Solaris lighting. The anemones were under T5s

I'm jealous of the color of the foot. We only seem to get purple around here.

Purple tend to be from the Philippines; red I have only seen in French Polynesia, but I'm sure they are found elsewhere. In French Polynesia all the magnificas have red bases with brown tentacles. There are no purples that I have seen there.

Here's the anemone from this morning. I will be moving the ocellaris out and the perculas in. The ocellaris are to large and they are interfering with the anemone feeding.
I took the pic before the MH wormed up so it's a little bluer than normal.

Looking great.
I find that H. magnifica also interfere with the black coloration of my Onyx. Keep this in mind if you want to put A. percula with him. You have had him for over two weeks without problem, so I think he will be doing well from now on. Sorta out of the wood IME.

I made mine out of a solatube extension. Where did you get the hammertone?

One of my LFS's has two brown based mag's. They keep them in small cubicles under poor lighting. They are both pretty limp looking and starting to bleach. They never remain healthy long under those conditions.

Here's a video of the red based magnificas in the Red Sea. One of my favorite videos.

Well that's not good. I have a pair of small perculas. One is from the Picasso bloodline and the other is from Solomon Islands. Right now they are living in a LTA and seem to be coloring up nicely. I have to move them into the mag, because the ocellaris are to big and I don't have room to put them anywhere else. I hope it doesn't effect their color to much.

That is odd that yours are coloring up nicely in an LTA, my pair is losing their color ever since they have been in my LTA. At least I am pretty sure it is because of the LTA. The female was the first to be hosted, and she started to lose her black first, and once the male when in, he started to lose his. Once I get up the energy I am going to move one of my Haddonis to that tank (( and sell the LTA )) and see what happens.

Well I know the Picasso was very young when I first got it. The SI percula was very small, so I believe it was young as well. It was only about 3/4" when I got it. They didn't have hardly any black on them when I first got them. That may be why they seem to be coloring up while they're in a LTA. They may just be maturing???????

Update.
Well the anemone did look a little limp there for a couple of days. I'm not sure what ticked it off. I think it may have been the ocellaris. The smaller perculas are in it now and it looks better. Its feeding response isn't as good as it was though.

I got the lights kinda put together. I plan on running 10K 250W MH in these reflectors and HO T5 actinics beside them.

FWIW, my mag caused a color fad in a pair of onyx. but I think it will be hit and miss just like with BTAs.. I have seen onyx go from jet black to orange in less than a week in a BTA, but OTOH, I have a pair in a BTA and they are still jet black. I believe the same can happen with H.mag

I like your DIY reflectors and new tank, very nice. EC- I am with you, I think my 30" cube would be a nice home for a mag!!! But my BTA's might not think so.

Looking good,
Aaron

If my mag survives and causes my perc's to remain orange, I guess I'll live with that.;) I'd just be happy that the mag survived.

Any updates?

Well........I don't know what to think. The anemone is not cycling like many others do. It keeps its mouth tight, but overall the anemone seems limp. It's no longer attached and the color is fading. I don't hold out much hope to be honest.

I've tried less flow, more flow, 175W MH, 250W MH, and the anemone remains unresponsive. I'm at a loss. I'm open to suggestions if anyone has any.

Thanks.
