Awais' 120g Build

Bought my first corals today from Steph: 5 Zoas,
I know only 1 name for now, Eagle eye zoa, and thats the only one which opened up almost immediately!
Here are the pics!

Quick PAR check.
With 100% power( 75% power of LED really),
1 Inch below the lights, PAR > 2000
Unrecordable!!

At water surface: 7 inches Below : 1600.
Abt 12 inches below: 1200( near the top of the rocks: Acro spot)!!!

Too much PAR!
Will dial it down and map the whole thing when I get time.

Modified Recirculating BP reactor

Modified Recirculating BP reactor

So, I got successful modifying the new TLF 550 into a recirculating reactor with 1" PVC pipes.
Its big, but it fits nicely in my sump along with the skimmer ( see both the videos)
You'll love the flow. Its just a new Mag 3, output dialed in to only 40% flow! Have a lot of room if it ever slows.
Or if it ever gets insufficient, I can change the pump to a higher Mag.

Enjoy the pics and video! :p

Randys 2 (3) part automatic dosing.

Randys 2 (3) part automatic dosing.

Just an update of the Randys 2 (3) part dosing automated.:fish1:

Thanks Dave!!

It seems to me the alk, cal, mag levels are reverberating currently..... seems like it might take some time to stabilize with the doser......
in the mean while the corals are taking the brunt and Im not a happy camper.....

I made the mistake of not adding the doser from day one the cycling was going on, that way it would be done reverberating.....
I added them the day I got the corals...and poor corals..... and upset me....:mixed:

Nice work:thumbsup:

Resist the urge to chase your alk, calcium and magnesium numbers. Since your tank is new and you don't have a lot of calcifying (Hard) corals (SPS/LPS), you should technically be fine with just regular water changes. It's not until you have several decent sized hard coral colonies that are growing rapidly that you will see a significant drop in your alk/calcium/Mg and require regular dosing to keep up in between water changes.

Since you have the dosers, I would just set them to a low dose and only test once a week and only act on the numbers when you see a trend over 3 consecutive weeks (assuming the numbers aren't clear off-the-charts crazy). Some will probably say testing once a week is too much, but if you just want to get a baseline for your dosing schedule I would say its fine. Once you get a rough idea on how fast your tank is using alk/calc/Mg you can change your testing schedule accordingly. I'm currently on a monthly testing for the big 3 in my tank and make slight adjustments to my dosing schedule each time I test.

Best of luck! When you get things stable again and want try SPS let me know and I'll give you a green digi or birdsnest to throw in there and try.

What he said!

The only thing I would add is to keep a close eye on it if coraline algae starts taking off since it uses up a lot of calcium.

Thanks Justin,

I have decreased the dose to about 1/3rd what Randy suggested for new tanks and will go from there.
And yes I will try to resist the temptation to check it q3 days, :worried2:
I also had decreased the lighting down to max 300 PAR on the top and will slowly increase it weekly......
Thanks for the offer. I will wait a good month or two before getting anything new in there...
