Battle CYANO!

Hey everyone,

The past month or so I have had the slow growth of cyanobacteria and dinos infiltrating my tank. It started off as a small spot and then it grew and grew. I checked my water and everything is good. No PO4 or nitrates with salifert. I still added rowaphos and chemipure elite since I figured some how phosphates are fueling this thing and now it's growing out of control.

I did a water change 2 weeks ago and siphoned most of it out and now it has quadrupled in size. My dad just wants me to keep siphoning it out but I know that is not going to fix the problem.

Photo period is 5 hours MH, 9 hours VHO's. I have lots of flow and use filter socks. Regularly run carbon.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have been in this hobby for over 6 years and never had cyanobacteria so this is a first for me.

Thanks

-Matthew

Just cause your test show zero p04 and notrates doesnt mean thats actually what they are! With the out break those obviously arnt your true levels... Have you check your TDS?

Are you dosing anything in your tank? Cyano is a bacteria. I had a real hard tine with a patch in my tank. It did not go away until I used bio pellets and zeobak.

I've heard of some people reporting dosing vinegar in their tanks has helped them get rid of it.

In the past when all else failed Ive used that stuff by Dr. G's and it worked but If you dont fix what ever caused it in the first place itll just come back

Just finished fighting cyno a few months back. The answer was simple. Bio pellets wiped it out. had tried everything for months and had all but given up. put bio pellets on and about a week and a half later it all started dying. been gone completely for a few months now and i have to say even my coral looks better. These things are amazing!!!!!

Thanks for the help guys.

The only thing I haven't checked is the TDS of my RO/DI water. I guess that's where I'm going to start. If that doesn't do it then I might look into the whole bio pellets thing.

LOL at your quote of "water changes were so last year." too funny, I didn't think anyone even saw that. I didn't do water changes for at least 3 years and never had cyano so I don't know where this stuff came from.

The only thing I dose is calcium, alk, and mag. No vodka/scotch/rum/fortloco dosing here. lol

Thanks again,

Matthew

I have had an outbreak recently that I believe was caused by Iron overdosing. I have been siphoning the sand when i do my water changes to keep it under control. I have zero Phosphates and only 0.5 Nitrates so the Iron is my probable cause. I don't have a test kit to confirm. But, if you have been dosing Iron, that may be your cause.

Well I tested my RO/DI water and it comes up 0.00 tds. So I really don't know where to go from here. I was told it could be silicates added to the city water but I check the yearly chart Plantation gives us and it doesn't say anything about silicates.

So how could this have happened? Just out of nowhere this explosion of dynos and cyano even after doing a 50% water change.

I'm thinking of sending my water off to a lab to get checked.

Any other thoughts?

Oh and I haven't added any iron to my tank.

Thanks

I had an episode and did a lights-out for 2 days and it never returned hth at this point Im sure youve done this....

forgive me matt but its kind of what you see is what you get ....no water changes for 3 yrs, no dosing, no additives, no high end filtration set ups and a thinking that water changes are so last year lol .....and am i correct you have no TDS meter on your RODI set up either WOW is all I can say ...how you made it this long without issues may be up for scientific study lol its kind of like be careful for what you brag about not having to do because its going to bite you in the end....now get ready for water change after water change getting rid of that stuff

It's a bacteria. It's feeding off of something. Do the basics and also make sure you have enough flow.

you need to be doing the water changes on a regular basis like every week right now that will help but you need to find the source .....coming from somewhere

try to find some erythromycin(spelling).. its a antibiotic that will wipe out the bacteria bloom..If not add some kind of carbon source to attract and break down the bacteria( pellets,vodka,MB7, many products out there..

good luck..

i have the same problem and cant find the source i did a 90% water change with ro water i put gfo and its back iam do the three days again and try vodka or something made for phosphate removal in liquid form but iam in just getting angry and ****ed its been like a 3 month battle and its always comes back but only time will tell i just need to be patience

Matt please post a pic I would like to see this stuff
Some say green/brown fuzzy others say purp slimy
I'm so confused lol
