beer thread

yeah the banana bread brew is pretty sweet... but then again.. I am more of a strongbow cider kind of guy. got 20 gallons in my basement just finishing secondary. Brewed it to 15 percent abv it'll prob get blackballed by the guys after they can't remember anything haha. small note... to anyone brewing... BE CAREFUL WITH GINGER additions. maybe like a teaspoon. I completely ruined 5 gallons. :(

Gary,
Have you tasted SN Bigfoot barleywine yet? It's excellent. (Don't let the name scare you. It's very drinkable.)
thanks for the tip- I'll have to locate some and try it.

Regarding the Rochester/Empire BrewFest on Saturday:
According to what I've heard, you pay the admissions price and receive a certain number of tickets. Samples of beers cost you tickets. If you happen to sample a beer that you don't like and toss the sample out you've wasted a ticket.

I won't be going.

I LOVE hops. One of my "Mark You're a Special Guy" beers is Lagunitas Hop Stoopid. My wife tasted it, spit it out and said, "It tastes like weed!". So I'm with ya on the hops.

I forgot to mention, I like their 60 minute for sure. The 120 doesn't taste like beer to me. It really was like a beer flavored liquor. That hoppy bite we all seem to crave was not present to my recollection, which is foggy at best.

I shared the 12 oz bottle with Tim from ABC who is another degenerate beer lover like all of us. We literally choked it down. Each sip followed by a "Holy $#%^". Really was not an enjoyable experience for me. But I can say I tried it. I'm guessing you'll just have to find out for youself......
The older the 120 is the better it taste IMO. I've got some 2 year old bottles I'm waiting to crack open and savor. Just make sure you let them warm up a bit before you pound it as I've found that helps "open the bouquet" and it taste better that way rather than icy cold.

Is anyone going to the Roc.city Empire Brewfest? http://www.roccitybrewfest.com/

I haven't heard much good about this fest yet. They had breweries listed that had never comitted to coming and some other issues getting selection. If you guys want to spend $40 come on over, buy some frags, and we can drink most of what they've got listed right in front of my tank...

Yeah buddy!! Good fresh and rockin when you age it for a bit.

Anchor Foghorn is just as good and supposedly ages a bit better than Sierra, but never had the chance to do a side by side of the two. Tap & Mallet has 2009 Foghorn on tap right now(or did last friday :( )

Youngs Double Chocalate Stout is also a nice introduction for the BMC scardies afraid of "dark" beers.

Walter, I'd ALMOST be willing to try it again, using your advice. The 120 I tried was direct from the brewery, so I'm sure it was a month old. Also, it was rip roaring cold. Another faux pas, per your instructions, I see. So doesn't look like I gave it much of a chance crossing my peasant lips.

I ain't dishing out the cash for it though. I just won't turn it down if the opportunity presents itself :D

Anyone tried CB's Caged Alpha Monkey IPA?

Got to The Weg's and NO TORPEDO......keep it together maaaaaaan....... Saw they were promoting the stuff. Bought a 6 Rack.

My fear with IPA's and PA's in general is that there's going to be a sweetness component to it. I HATE that. This stuff is really hoppy, no over powering sweetness. Really nice. Glad I grabbed it.

Made in Honeoye.....where ever that is....

I'll be caught up to you shortly.....

That will definitely give you a jump on the evening. My night ended abruptly with my wide waking me up from my seated position on the couch. A couple of IPAs after chasing a 15 month old around for 13hrs will do that.

How'd it taste Walter?

Boozy at first, but still had some hops to it. The warmer it got the better balance it had and the hot alcohol flavors went away and became nice and malty. Definitely a sipper!

Second week in a row no Torpedo at The Wegs. They are officially on Double Secret Probation!!! Couldn't find either of Walters recommendations either. Chose Stone IPA, makers of Dead Guy Ale and Arrogant Bastard. Decent. Not my face. But not too sweet. I hate that. They're out of San Diego.

they have it down here at wegmans...lol...Just picked up some hop stoopid from wegmans going to crack it open when the kids go to bed.
