what a great thread. I'm a backyard bird watcher...and have always wanted to be able to take some pics like you guys are getting. What kind of camera and lens are you guys using? Those pics are just breath-taking.

Looks like a Red-Shouldered Hawk and possibly an Annas hummingbirds, but I am an East Coaster and am a shorebird guy, so I have no real skills with hummingbirds, we just have the Ruby-throated...

If it's from Costa then its a male Purple-throated Mountain-Gem (Lampornis calolaemus)

There are three 'Mountain-Gems', all have the white eye line and their most obvious differences are the throat colors.

Don't know what this guy was. He was in a stariwell of a parking garage across the street from me. It was dark and he seemed to be sleeping. Had to take the pic with a flash and manually focus because there was no light. Any thoughts???

IFbettas, it looks like a Snowy Egret, and a Male and Female Black-crowned Night Heron

Here are a few pictures of a Black Guillemot (related to puffins), which is very, very, very rare for Long Island. There normal southern range is Maine, this one is actually an Arctic one as well. Arctic Guillemots are more white then the souther ones.
