birth of 2 builds totaling 30k gallons

Thx garias. Just to update people on project. There is some problem in the sand soil that is requiring us to change plans in sub basement as chimney underpinning is an issye due to soft sand. New plans for shape and shift in the sub basement are being worked up now including fish tank equipment layout

I find it amazing when people have completely removed all GFO reactors and skimmer and filter socks with nothing but a good algae scrubber in the sump and harvesting giant handfuls of algae every week

Do you use a scrubber or are you saying you are skeptical about them? You provided great information on size and flow requirements! Anything special for lighting?

Scrubber?? I just don't know. I grow macro cheto and it doesn't grow that huge with gfo and vodka vinegar dosing. My nitrates are starting to get under control. Running about 12 ppm now. I think about sulfur or methane denitrators also. But risks there are so high. Lighting will be exotic cannons on big 14k tank over reefs. Lots of blue. And in sps tank combo of 10k and radiums in single reflectors with t 5 and actinic supplements.

I personally would skip the scrubber.. Not to many if any LARGE builds or public Aquariums running them and I'd guess there is a good reason for that. Scrubbers are a highly debated form of filtration and passionately defended and also exposed for flaws and risks on multiple threads around the Internet. I'm not a hater of scrubbers I'd just pass if I was investing this much money into a tank and go with a more widely accepted and modern means of reducing nutrients..

Build is looking awesome I've been subbed since the beginning and can't wait for it to come together.

I run one on my 265, but compared to this, that's just a tiny build. Works well in conjunction with a skimmer, but I wouldn't want the task of scraping 2,000 square inches of double sided screen every week. Yuk! Also, FWIW, size of ATS is driven by how much you feed not by tank volume.

If you had one Andrew,...you would have to add a dedicated algae scrubber employee lol,... What are you planning or not for a uv fixture? I know you have a big Aqua on the 1250 now.---Rick

Why in theory are these better than growing macro algae as cheto in refuge? Grows faster?

It actually grows hair algae, turf algae and others im guessing in a controlled environment vs wanted macro algae in a refugium. It's said to be great at what it does and keep nutrients low and algae out of the display but like calorie said it would be a feat in itself just cleaning the thing weekly.

Also the debate on the algae actually releasing toxins into the water that inhibits coral growth and staining the water plus other things Im blanking on right now. Some of the debates are childish but some are very informative when not coming from someone trying to sell you theirs. This is all just things that I've read through as I never had one so calore or some other people ingeneral with real world experience will be able to answer your questions better than me.

There are plenty of threads to read and you will stumble onto the debates about them. They have been around for many years and we're big back in the day and have been gaining popularity (at least imo) over the last few years again.

Well at moment by making small changes and bringing dn my alk from lower alk salt I've been able to get my vodka vinegar dose up to 125 ml per day without much at all stn. I've also been siphoning top sand in 2 tanks and adding new sand keeping dsb deep!!! And took all sand out BlackBerry on 40 and peperment angel tank. I'm running lowest nitrate now in long time. Maybe 10 12 ppms. I've also added tons of clams and running clams and xenia and large cheto in refugium. Yes it's living!! Leaving me phosphate at. 10 so vodka can work and only changing one gfo reactor at a time. Think this keeps the cheto alive also.!! As opposed to phosphate shock. I'm pretty happy now. If I can get some of these large angels out of tank, , my emperor has turned into real bully and got huge. Same with trigger. Pull those and replace with juveys and I might fall below 10ppms no3.

So I split my 80 gallon breeder refuge in half with egg crate and screen. Half has cheto ball that I used to get obsessed with spinning but soon it would float and burn out. Now I added rocks to weight it down and its getting thick. The other half I added about 6 red sea blue maximas large. Alone as no fish pick and under halides. There is also xenia growing. All this has helpwd no3 along with higher vodka dose which is now possible due to lower alkalinity. Around 8. Oh ya. New salt has same alk so we can do mopre often and larger water changes. I'm sure this didn't hurt also.

I've read that clams will help with nutrient reduction. What has this done to your ca consumption?

I don't see too much different. I run lime water for evap and run 2 reactors but not heavy. Maybe ph 6.8 to 7. Alk is stable at 8.

Btw I love these clams so much and how open and good they are in dedicated tank with no fish picking around, that in new system I am doing a separate low profile rimless clam only tank that we can look down into. Its amazing how well clams do without angels or fish!!! Lol.
