Blue carpet advice.

I waited and waited to find a blue carpet anemone and finally my LFS brought one in. I have had the anemone since last Tueday and sometimes it looks like it is thriving and others it looks like is struggling.

It will swell up and look perfect, then poof, it is gaping, shrunken with brown stringy stuff coming out. It has been eating and it regurgitates it's food. Some days it does this process one time, sometimes twice.

I did have clowns in the tank which were beating the crud out of the anemone, but I have since removed those. Saturday my female saddleback clown ripped a piece of food from the mouth of the anemone. Ever since then the anemone has been eating slow.

The water chemistry is perfectly fine...I don't know what else to do. Has anyone experienced this sort of behavior?? I know some have with terrible consequence, but is there any hope at this point for this guy? If so does anyone have suggestions for me...if any info is needed I will hapilly provide it as I am truly bummed out this anemone hasn't pulled through and acclimated how I had hope.:( :(

So there is not much I can do..it will probably die? Is this what I should assume? If so when should I take it out?

I don't know if that's true...but i have zero experience with anemones, so I hope someone else will be more helpful.

If it is often deflating then something is wrong. Is it's mouth gaping open? Generally speaking, when Haddon's go down hill, it can be hard to stop it. I would feed your blue Haddoni daily so it can get some energy and strength which might be just enough for it to recover. When you feed your Haddoni, place a piece of raw shimp or fish(make sure its fresh) on the mouth so it doesn't have to work to feed itself.

1. Do a 20 percent water change
2. Run carbon
3. Feed your anemone daily

You were smart by removing the clowns. Good luck and keep us updated.

Thanks for the response...everytime I feed it, the anemone regurgitates its food. It does gape and today it hasn't looked very good. I don't know what's up with it b/c it will look good for a while, then look bad. The last 24 hours though it hasn't looked to good. :(

Just keep trying with the feedings. This is your only chance for it to comeback. If you have to, when it regurgitates, just get a new piece of food and place it in the mouth and keeping pusing it lightly into the mouth.

Thanks for the advice...I'll give it a shot. Tonight I fed it a slice of silverside, and I dropped it on its mouth just as you suggested. It ate it much faster...I'll continue on with this approach.

BTW, I changed the carbon the other day and have been doing 10% water changes about every 3 days or so.

Keep up with your water changes and carbon. Definately feed your blue Haddoni daily. Place the food on the mouth so it uses less energy and hopefully your anemone can make a comeback. Got any pictures by any chance?

I also have a blue carpet (haddoni) that i recieved a day ago. When I got it, it was shipped with a small amount of water but enought to keep it covered. When I acclimated it ( 3 hours ) and put it into the tank it looked Great. It actually looked better than when I got it. A day later though and it is half the size it was and the mouth goes from almost closed to silver dollar size with half of its stomach hanging out, then a few hours later the mouth will be slightly open. I also have followed advise from earlier in the thread and have got it to eat a small piece of shrimp. All water peramiters are great nitrates = 0, any other ideas would be apprecitated. Also keep us up to date on how yours is doing and if anything is working and if I find any other things that may help I will post them here.
Thanks,
Scott

rylin, can you give us some details.

Like:

How long did the anemone last before it died?
Did the anemone look good some time and bad others?
How long was it in the LFS before you bought it?

Any other details would be helpful as well. Thanks

If you have trouble feeding siversides, you could also try krill. It might handle the smaller pieces better.

COreefer, how is yours doing? Is it eating?

It eats but it regurgitates. last night it ate and seeemed to keep the food down. It could have regurgitated in the middle of the night, but it tends to deflate when it does that. I will have some pics soon...I took one today of when it was deflated now I am just waiting for it to reinflate so I can post both.

BTW, do you kow what the turd like objects in its mouth could be? It isn't string like zoo...it is firm brown small balls.

Thanks for the suggestion mwood...I have been feeding it bits of silverside...no bones, no scales, nothing but small pieces of meat.

Last night I almost took it out of the tank because he looked dead, but I had guests over and did not want to mess with it then. This morning I am glad I did not because my blue carpet is back and looking very healthy. I dont know how to explain it but last night the way he looked (flat, non responsive, and mouth open half of his total size) I would have bet he was doomed or dead. Now he has moved over a little bit under a shelf and looks 90% healthy. I think he is going to make it. One thing I am not sure about is that my cleaner shrimp has looked like it was cleaning him and this morning it was reaching into the blue carpets mouth (barely open small slit). So I fed it a small piece of shrimp and away it went. any Ideas what the shrimp was doing? My carpet is down in the sand (where I placed him) but not attached to anything. Should I move him? I have MH w/VHO actinics is it maybe too bright (he has moved under a shelf).
Thanks,
Scott
