A very nice blue gigantea just sold on an auction site for $1275. I'm in the market for a nice gig or haddoni, but that price really seems outrageous. Am I missing something? Is that what prices are for good colored nems? If so, I might have to go for a RBTA :) Just kinda surprised...

Definitely NOT the norm, here is a better idea of prices, though I would consider them to be a bit high personally.

For instance, my brother bought a blue gig a couple weeks ago for $200 at our LFS, but it was pure luck it was a gig and not haddoni. Most suppliers do not correctly ID haddoni/gigs, they get grouped together and sold as the same thing.

That place is WAY overpriced for their BTAs. Even my LFS sells greens for about $45.00(3-4 inches) and reds for I think $90.00(3-4 inches). No way ever would I pay $130 for a 2-3 inch red. I got mine at 5 inches for $90.00 and looks very much like his "Orange Sunburst" that he's selling for $320.00 lol.

Funny because my lfs sells greens (3") for 20$ & "orange sunburst" for 40$ (~4")

It could be that people were just trolling with no intent to buy it.

Even a nicely colored gig should not be more than $150-$300 depending on where you live. Spending that much on a gig that still needs to be shipped to you is insane. No matter how good it looks online there is still a good chance it will be severely compromised during shipping.

Is it safe to assume this is in the U.S.? I've seen it happen in places like Australia, but that's in AUDs.

I think we also need to keep in mind that there are people with deep pockets who have a larger spending theshhold. When I see red haddoni selling for $700 on LA I think it's insane, but I refuse to spend more than $200 for any gigantea (unless it was red, LOL).

In the past few years that I've monitored pricing, $400 seems to be the max for a colored gig.

What's interesting to me is that color makes no difference in terms of the price. For example, in terms of the colored gigs (tan or any derivation of brown are not included), neon green gigs are the most rare, purple being the most common, followed by blue -- yet greens are typically the cheapest of the three.

Finally, health plays a key role in price. I would gladly pay $200 for a gig that came out of another reefer's tank, than $50 for one shipped to me.

DNak hits it on the head. It is funny that greens are the most rare, but lower priced than purple and green. This is most likely caused by the collectors knowing that blue and purple is desirable in corals, so it must be for anemones too. And the deep pockets part is valid as well. I have had customers that were wealthy beyond belief-VPs of major worldwide corps- and I have had them tell me directly "I dont care how much these items cost-I worked hard for my money so I wouldnt have to care".

I find that curious too. I think it's probably due to the fact that misinformed LFS's (the majority, when it comes to carpets) perceive green as a common color (think haddoni, bta, lta even mags). Green/brown is also the most common color combination of most LPS and softies, whereas purples, reds and blues are more 'rare' and desirable.

I think by and large, unless you are a true gigantea collector, even an "anemone guy" is more likely to be willing to pay more for a blue/purple gig than a green one.

It would not surprise me if greens are more common in the wild, but are passed over by collectors because they can get more money for the blues and purples. Just a hypothesis based on the fact that greens used to be much more common than the blues. That goes for haddoni as well. A bright green haddoni is pretty rare now too, when they used to be very common.

Granted some of the prices are quite ridiculous, but if you're impatient and want a gigantea, it might be a website to consider if you have some extra cash to throw around.

LFSs can only do so much, they could order 10 gigantea and they all end up as haddonis. You could wait years to see the gig you wanted as well.

I didn't link that website for the BTAs...... :hmm2:

I guess the price is due to demand. Color Gigantea are snatched up from DD within seconds of been posted

Rare or not I like bright green Gigantea and bright green Haddoni the best of all the colors

I tend to agree with this. The green gigantean are brighter and neon color compare to the blue or purple. plus the green is uniform unlike the purple or blue which tend to have brown center and only 30% of the whole length of the tentacle is blue.

I have always preferred the greens as well.
