BTA + Vortech mp10 = . . . .

Hiya,

I'm planning a build using a 30 breeder 36x18x12 tall
or mayyyybe a 40 breeder 36x18x14 tall.

I have always wanted an anemone and moving from a 10 gallon Nano I finally have the ability to get one.

My main circulation will be a single Vortech Mp10.
Was just wondering if anyone had tips, tricks, horror stories, advice etc. on successfully and safely keeping a BTA with such an open type power head.

This guy in the nano forum seems to have had success with it.

Just use the foam cover that comes with the powerhead. Rinse it off at every water change.
 
It can work, but just make sure to make a cover, shroud, whatever to cover the inflow part of the powerhead so if your nem goes walking it doesn't end up chopped up.
 
certainly the anem picking up shop and strolling around is something that's impossible to control. That being said, the tank dimensions give a LOT of open space and I hope to be able to isolate the anem on an island of live rock. With sand all around and the vortech pointing right at the rick, from about 1.5 feet away, I would hope the nem is happy.

BTA's don't like to travel across sand correct? Will they ever just detach and float around as a mode of transport?

I wouldn't say that it is impossible to control a BTA from moving. They are moving to find a more suitable living location that the one you picked out. If you pick a good one from the start and know how to give it the best conditions possible, you shouldn't have too much of a problem.
 
Placement is key. I have a mp10 in a 10G and my RBTA aside from moving off the rock I bought it on, hasn't moved ever (1.5 years).
 
i would keep the cover on the mp10 for at least a couple of weeks. i had one before that decided to go suicidal and went straight for my mp10. unfortunately i wasnt home and it sucked coming home from work with a cloudy tank. second time i got my bta, i left the cover on for a month before i took it off. i had to make sure the bta was happy because i didnt want to come home to another cloudy tank
 
We have a cluster of 6 BTA's(3 rose, 3 green) about 5-10 inches from an mp40, with an mp10 on the other side of the tank, and they havent moved in over a year. They are pretty much getting blasted by flow and love it. Be careful, run the screen and let the nem get settled in. Once they find a spot they like they usually dont move. Once that happens you can remove the screen. Hope this helps.
 
thanks all, I think ill go with a eggcrate cage or something if not just the foam intake cover, then let the nem find his place in the world and everyone smiles.

this is all like 4-6 months down the road anyway, :)
 
Got my nem and put him in the other end of the tank. Had the Vortech covered until the nem was stationary for over two weeks.

The crappy stock screen for the vortech just collected algea so I could not stand having it on. Everyone seems happy.
