Bubble blaster vs Askoll pumps?

Sounds good JPat, snap a few of the skimmer body when you get a chance. I'm also curious what scfh your bb3000 is getting. Mine is only getting around 30-35, with a RMA lil meter. Do you have any mb's coming out of the outlet pipe? How deep do you have your skimmer?

All someone has to do is look at the build quality to give an idea. Have heard people talk about the amount of bubbles but not many have commented on the composition of the motor, pinwheel etc.

A 3 year warranty does not mean its good. They probably have calculated the expected failure rate and cost of production. Its probably included in the price of the pump. Meaning if it had a 90 day warr they could sell it for much less, like 140.00.

I had some of the same concerns you mention above, so I gave the pump a good inspection before throwing it in the sump...I was definitely impressed with the pump when I took it apart. The impeller / magnet assembly seems very well made, and beefy to say the least. The volute seems to be machined well, and a nice cres. machine fastener was used with corresponding helicoils in the pump body vs. just tapping the plastic. I don't remember right now without taking it apart, but I also think they used silicone o-rings instead of rubber as well. I have had the pump running for a few months with great results, and only time will tell about the reliability.

Looks like the one on SWC site. Looks like the skimmer is kicking arse. I wonder how the bb5000 would do on the 200 with ext neck? JPat, how does the body look, is there more room for air in there? Do you have the bubble plate installed in your skimmer? I took mine out and noticed a lil increase in performance. Just a thought. Congrats on one heck of an upgrade.

removeing the plate will increase performance? i thought the plate was there to increase performance...

is there a DIY on the extention neck?

I noticed that the bubble plate was causing more back pressure on the pump b/c the holes were not large enough. It was perfect for the sicce pump, but the bb3000 pushes more water.

Sorry for the delayed response. I will post some more pics and a video tomorrow if I get a chance. I have to get my hands on a meter to measure the scfh. The skimmer is sitting in 10" of water. I do get some micro bubbles from the outlet, but my sump baffles take care of them. I tried taking the bubble plate out, and the body of my skimmer turned into a mini tornado! It was way too violent.

More later. . .

As promised, here are pics of my MSX BB3000 mod. I definitely notice a huge improvement. The BB is huge compared to the Sicce. Powers up each time without fail, and operates much quieter. While I don't have a Dwyer meter to measure the actual numbers, it definitely sounds like it is sucking in more air. Attached are pics of the pump comparison, bubble size, and a 24 hour pic. Once this gets broken in I will post some more pics.

Wow, that is ginormous.

bubbleblaster pump is a good pump it had done a great job for me and you cant go wrong with the 3 year warr. and for the price.

so i'm wondering if the BB 5000 would be a better choice for the 200 extreme skimmer rather then the 3000, i was talking to a guy today and he said to go with the 5000 and the scfh would be fantastic for that skimmer. like in the
80s. so what are your thoughts, i was thinking it would be too much for that skimmer.

I had an askoll 1500 on a 200 and the scfh was 55-58. That was with the standard sicce pump hookup on the skimmer body. If you put a one inch opening you might get 80 but I can tell you what I was getting was IMO maxed out for that body. I had to run the skimmer in 7-7&1/2" water height with the extended neck.

You could get the extended neck, either remove the bubble plate, or drill larger holes in the plate, and drill a one inch hole for. That would be nice. I would like to see someone do that, I would like to do that myself, but I don't have room for the extended neck under my stand.

I have a an Askoll 1500 which was pulsing. So I sent my Askoll pump back to Coralvue a week ago. They checked it out and it is in fact faulty. Now I have another problem. CoralVue claims that they don't have any Askoll pumps in stock. They are offering me a BB5000 to replace the Askoll. They say it might be 6 weeks before they get pumps in. I asked if they could get a pump from one of there dealers and was told that none of the dealers had them in stock. I called 4 dealers inquiring about the Hurricone skimmers and was told that they did have them in stock.

What would you guys do? Take a BB5000 as a replacement or wait for the Askoll 1500?

I have had an askoll 1500 on a hurricone that I once had. Well, sold them system with skimmer and downsized. With the new smaller system I bought the SR XP2000 skimmer with the BB2000. Now I know that its hard to compare apples to oranges, but from my observation the BB2000 is much louder (a low pitched hum, I can hear it upstairs if someone opens my stand doors), larger (cant understand why a pump that puts smaller air numbers is larger than a askoll 1500). This is also after 2 weeks use of the XP2000 so it isnt broken in yet.

Guillo, I would try the bb5000. What do you have to lose? I would make sure if you don't like the bb5000 as much as the Askoll that you could swap it out when they get Askolls in.

2Dawg, my bb3000 has been silent since day one. All I hear is air sucking. Don't forget that you have a 3 year warranty, so if it doesn't quiet down after breakin, I would send it back for replacement/inspection.

I doubt they would be willing to do that for me. Like I said in another thread it could not have happened during a worst time. My tank crashed a few days ago and I'm with out a frigging skimmer in my tank. I might be getting out of SPS, I still have to see how many corals are going to make it alive.

I have a PM redline 125 on my 57 right now. I'm not happy with the performance and I'd either like to swap out the pump for a bubbleblaster(which model?) or get an octopus super reef 1000. The SRO1000 comes with the BB1000 correct? Will I get any real gain out of a BB pump on my RL125 or is it hopeless?

EDIT: the reaction chamber is 22inches tall by 4.5inches diameter if that helps...
