Building a plywood 300gal tank

Quick question of all the reef gurus...

My LFS uses a swimming pool pump to circulate water through his tanks and he says that it is an excellent and very dependable choice? I happen to have a brand new still in the box 1 1/2 hp pool pump that I am planning to use for my 300gal plus about another 200gal of circulating...500 gal total... Any bad experiences with pool pumps? any reasons not to use them instead? I know that it is alot of power but it will be pumping many things including an OM 4 way perhaps.

1. I don't know if the seals on a pool pump would be SW safe.
2. The electricity! A 1.5hp pool pump running 24/7? Yikes!

Some pool or spa pumps cannot handle corrosive liquids like saltwater, but a good number of them offer kits to replace the shaft/impeller and any other parts with stainless steel. They are not often what I would call energy-effiicent, but they do move a massive amount of water.
