Building My 375gal Glass Reef

Don't give up on your Firefish, Alan. In the past, I've had them disappear for over a week only to show up again begging for food.

Tom
That's encouraging news. I know we all don't like losing fish or corals. :(

Evening, Elliott! Well, with me and golf, it's usually just lows ... - but thanks for the sentiments.

BTW: I was planning on sneaking in with your group for the WWZ tour.

really! you will be in town? that should be very cool  look forward to meeting you

Sorry for that - I was just kidding - although I would love to go. I often browse the different club forums, and I happened upon the WWZ tour thread on the Arizona-FRAG forum and saw your name. I was just trying to be clever.

GlassReef - I've read about 50% of your thread. Quite amazing build you have. You have accumulated many ideas from others, come up with many of your own, and created an incredible reef tank.

Somehow I stumbled upon your thread on the BeanAnimal overflow thread. I am in the planning stage of a ~50"L x 32"D x 25"H. I plan on a coast to coast external overflow (or maybe just near coast to coast) using the bean overflow. Can you answer a few questions:

What are the measurements of your external overflow? Specifically depth and height. Inside measurements would be best. I plan to use 1.5" pvc. I think that is what you used. Have you found that your overflow has the "perfect" dimensions? Would you have done it any differently if you could do it over? It seems like the smaller the H x D the better, since bigger just means more added weight and in the way for reaching into the tank. However, I realize it needs to be deep enough as to not restrict flow and to fit the plumbing and bulkheads.

Also, where did you get those big reservoir tanks for your SW and RO/DI. Those are nice! (As everything else in your build).

SW Steve - Thank you for the comments. :)

The overflow is (inside) 5-1/2" front to back and 7-1/2" high. It's drilled with 2-3/8" holes (9" on center) for 1-1/2" Hayward bulkheads. Wouldn't change a thing - it works perfectly.

The tanks are Ace Roto-Mold and I ourchased them from U.S.Plastics.

Tom,
Are you still using that Small LCD screen to display the PH and temp and what not? I would kinda like to see a final picture of that thing in place if you wouldn't mind.

Your fish room is amazing. I've gone through your fish room summary a few times now.

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed my thread.

I've taken the display down, as I'm finalizing the frame and access doors on the front of the tank. It should be done in about 3 or 4 weeks. I'll definitely post some pics, along with a fairly thorough description of how it works, when it's done.

glassreef - I am trying to learn about the balling method. I think I understand it quite well, but I can't find information specifically about the ideal schedule for dosing.

When I get my system set up, I plan to use a profilux controller and triple dosing pump. Therefore I can dose the three solutions as quickly or slowly as ideal. Do you dose your three solutions at the same time slowly around the clock or do you dose each solution at different times?

Rather than trying to reinvent the wheel, if you don't mind, I'll just answer your question with some things I wrote a while ago:

As for my system, here are the formulas I use:

Alk - 4 cups (32oz) sodium hydrogen carbonate in 2gals RO/DI water.
Ca - 4 cups (32oz) calcium chloride dihydrate in 2gals RO/DI water.
Mg - 1.6 cups (12.8oz) magnesium chloride hexahydrate and 1 cup (8oz) magnesium sulfate heptahydrate in 2gals RO/DI water.

I started dosing at a rate of .4mL per gallon of EACH solution per day. As my frag and fuge tanks are not yet on-line that means .4 X 330gals = 132mL of each solution per day.

Right now each of my three dosers is on for 10 minutes at a time 8 times a day. One quickly gets to the point where their params are totally stable.

It's not a good idea to dose the supplements simultaneously (especially Ca and Alk) due to the probability of precipitation, so I set the timer's up in a staggered fashion. Each supplement is set up to be dosed 8 times a day for 10 minutes. That makes 80 minutes X 1.6mL = 128mL - very close to the 130mL I was shooting for.

The Alk is dosed at 12:00, 03:00, 06:00, 09:00 - both A.M. and P.M.
The Ca is dosed at 01:00, 0400, 07:00, 10:00 - both A.M. and P.M.
The Alk is dosed at 02:00, 05:00, 08:00, 11:00 - both A.M. and P.M.

You can see that the doses are staggered one hour apart and no two supplements are dosed at one time.

i just want to say thank you for the wonderful fish room photos.
its so organized and attention to small details is incredible

P.S.(i wish i have a fish room!)

Somehow I'd missed your little fish room tour and what a pity! That's a dream come true right there I am hella jealous. I could hang out in there happily all day and never even see into the display!

How tall is the ceiling in there and where is your tank? Maybe it's your angle but in the pic with the light rack raised it looks 20 feet tall!

Impressive equipment room...

Impressive equipment room...

I have seen professional labs that weren't that spotless... congratulations!

It must be a joy to work on your tank.

LL

P.S. - thanks for all the inspiration for our project!

The ceiling is 10ft, I think - and thank you so much for your praise! I've been following you're build and it keeps getting better and better. For those of you following my thread, click on lastlight's Red-House. He has built the most awesome (read classy) stand. His DIY light fixture lift is an inspiration - ingenious!

Mornin', George. Thanks. Yeah, I went a little anal on the fishroom. But I love it. :D As for inspiration, as I said at the beginning of my thread - most of my ideas were taken from the threads of the folks that had them.

BTW folks - George's is another thread that you must visit (Red-House) - unbelievable - and he just keeps going.

... where do you get your balling salts and what brand?
I buy all my salts at Bulk Reef Supply (the house brand). Quality products and great CS.

Hey Tom,
What's the latest on the coral that was STN'ing / RTN'ing? You probably already know this.. but incase you didn't; sometimes they are saveable if you frag far enough away from the problem spots... sometimes that is not possible either.

Cheers,
Tim

Hey, Tim... The colony is in Coral Heaven. :( I did cut off two frags from spots not yet effected by the RTN - but no go. Both frags were tissueless within 36 hours. I really think the 64 degree tranport water is what did it in.

BTW: the hat in your avatar didn't, by any chance, belong to Antonio Fargas, did it?

Oh, and congrats on 500 posts!!

Hey Tom, I am using your build as much of the inspiration for my upcoming build..you've done a great job.

I haven't seen you mention whether the Bean Animal overflow system is as quiet as you hoped it would be? That's what I'm hoping to use and it will be in my living room so quiet is important.

Thanks.
