Burned SPS

I have an acropora and montipora species that suffered tissue loss from an alkalinity spike. The tips are now getting some algae growth on them. Do I need to trim the branches back to where the polyps remain? And if so, how do I keep algae from growing on the cut ends of the stalks?

How high did it spike and where is your dkh currently sitting?

I would get your system back nice and stable for at least a week before you clip the tips from your corals. When you clip the tip from a coral there is only live tissue left, even at the end where it had been clipped.

The tip that now has algae had originally died, then algae colonized.

So long as your corals are health and grow then the tip will not die and collect algae.

Thanks for the advice. The alk was up to 12.4- I have had a host of trouble achieving stabilization with my ca reactor- I just can't seem to get the CO2 bubble rate and flow rate constant. It has been very frustrating. The alk has dropped back into the 10s after cutting the flow rate down. I will shoot for the 8s and then proceed as you suggest.
