Butterflytown - 240 FOWLR

I've had 2 over the years. Both ate fairly quickly but only fresh seafood.
Chopped raw shrimp and chopped raw scallops were what they ate initially.
I would also try chopped clams since my current one loves that. The one I have now also loves (hakari jumbo) frozen bloodworms. Next would be Larrys fish frenzy. Doesn't go for PE or typical frozens with nearly as much enthusiasm. Has never eaten dry or nori.

He's starting to pay attention to the LRS foods, but hasn't eaten yet. I have some clams I can offer, I might pick up a couple shrimp tomorrow and try shredding them.

Matt, where you thinking of importing from Japan?
I believe that even if it was cheaper, you'll need to purchase a permit to import fish and on top of that, they need to be inspected at the airport by a government agent (broker) with high fees.

I've heard that the permit is very expensive.

As it's not going to happen, I'm not going to say where it was coming from, but it wasn't Japan.

Just wanted to add comments on their behavior.

Regarding the pair I watched, they don't take crap from other fish.
There was a powder blue tang in the tang which would sometimes give them a tail slap. The scythe would align their spikes toward the tang like a lionfish. They never started the fight though.

I'd love to have one some day, they are on my holy grail list. Pretty sure they are also on the "illegal to harvest list", so i'm not holding my breath.

And at the price that was thrown out, I'd have to have some severe monetary life changes to be able to afford one anyway.

I wish my altivelis would eat. I think all these butterflies that I got in seem to have something not quite right with them.

Think I may start Cupramine today, the raccoon is definitely scratching.

It's not plump, but I wouldn't call it skinny either.

I'm going to try some minced clam. If all else fails, I'll buy a fresh oyster tomorrow or Monday and give that a go.

Good job man !

Thanks!

This things got a long road ahead of it before it gets to my display tank. I noticed that there is some aggression from the multibar, I'm afraid he's going to get moved to my other tank.

I also noticed some spots on the pelvic fins tonight so I started cupramine.

Hopefully once those two stressors are taken care of the appetite will pick up.

Really glad to hear that its finally eating.
I saw a forum here recently about tube feeding but since its eating now, you don't need to go to such extremes.

Hopefully it will continue eating more aggressively.

Oyster seems to be the magic food for butterflyfish. If I remember correctly, you also got your rainfordi eating thru oyster.

BINGO! We've got an oyster lover. Still not eating strongly, but finally a feeding response.

Matt, please keep us posted on the copper treatment.
My bannerfish still has that spot on the pectoral fin and acts somewhat weird.
But it is eating for sure so I'm not going to treating it.

Maybe it has something similar to what your butterflyfish may or may not have.

You are correct, that is exactly how I got my Rainfordi to start eating. He's a pretty strong eater now too.

I'll see if I can get a picture of the white spots today, doesn't look like your typical C. Irritans.

Hi all. Just discovered this thread and I see there are a lot of successful Butterflyfish owners posting here.

I recently picked up 3 new Butterflies, a Raccoon, a Threadfin, and a Pearlscale. I did my research and have been trying to get them to start eating but they're just not interested.

I provided several rocks with lots of Aiptasia and Kenya Tree Corals just for them to munch on. I have seen all three of them picking at both the anemones and the corals, but certainly not enough to keep them alive. I've tried mysis, raw shrimp, krill, and whole live littleneck clams. I've also tried Formula One pellets, freeze dried brine, and flake. None of these have worked so far.

From everything I've researched, whole clams or live anemones seem to be the magic food for getting Butterflies to start eating. I would be very grateful if some of you could share your experience in this area.

How long have you had the fish? Texture and size can be a big part of the solution. I like grating the clam or shrimp with a small cheese grater.

Patience is also key, I just recently started getting my altivelis and collare to start eating the LRS foods. Still won't pick it from the water column.

Caribfan, are you feeding frozen? I can't imagine grating fresh clam. Lol. Slimy mess. I am feeding whole opened live clams. My angels love them but the butterflies are just swimming around picking at this and that on the rocks. Clearly they have an interest in food but not enough so to try anything I've offered.

Matt feeds Larrys religiously
