Butterflytown - 240 FOWLR

The whole tank was all screwed up. I put the mirror up and that seemed to take care of the achilles, but then my two pyramids started going at each other, which I have never seen before.

The big Regal had started chasing the Rainfordi too. I think things are on their way back to normal.

I need to add some additional flow, no proof of this, but I think it helps. Been torn between the Gyre and the MP40's. I love the programmability of the MP40s and it would pair nicely with my radions, but the gyre seems like a great deal.

I've got a Tunze 6255 and 6155 and they aren't quite enough, IMHO.

I think with your size tank a MP60 is the only way to go (no rebuild kits like the MP40) I would wait for the XF170

Boring Update:

The Altivelis and Collare are going through cupramine, two days in at full dose. They both eat, but have lost some of their appetite, which wasn't much to begin with.

There was a spot on the Altivelis, which is now gone, so that's a plus. I think I'm going to cut this treatment short at 14 days, instead of the typical 30.

I've also grown a pair and started the cupramine regimen on my multibar. I feel bad keeping this fish in quarantine for as long as I have. I'll be very interested to see how it interacts with my venustus trio once the cupramine treatment is done.

I've got some travel coming up in the end of March, but plan to go after a Mitratus or Declivis and maybe a few others once April rolls around.

I'm also heavily considering building a methanol denitrator, need to bite the bullet and buy an Apex. Apex, mp40s, mitratus/declivis, it all adds up $$$$.

Beautiful butterflies. Really nice, healthy looking fish in general. It seems like Butterflies require so much attention, especially when it comes to the eating/feeding.
Especially outside of the Raoaps/Tinkeri -complex.
Awesome display!

Sounds like April is going to be a expensive month for you Matt

Thanks for the comment, I try to keep my fish nice and fat.

To be honest, it's just these two that haven given me so much trouble, outside of the known tricky eaters like the Larvatus.

You should see my dusky eat, it's ridiculous. I think that fish could take down a half dollar size chunk of LRS three times a day by itself and still be hungry.

It's not all going to happen, but I'm hopeful for a big butterfly purchase.

I did a water change this morning and it was long overdue. I'm really intrigued with this methanol denitrator threat that Spotter turned me onto.

Sand is nice, but not when it's covered in algae...

You will have to let me know how that goes, it sounds intriguing to say the least. Algae is everyone's nemesis

that article in Coral about denitrifying swayed me the other way..please let me know how this goes...good luck!

Which issue what this in? I let my subscription end and am getting ready to buy the last couple and renew.

What were your main concerns?

I'll be sure to document it well in my thread. Need to read up on the article Ted referenced.

It'll be after the middle of April, I'm slammed with work the next two weeks and then on vacation.

Found the article, interesting that he states that methanol is toxic in the aquarium, but then goes no further in explaining its use in The denitrifying process.

The denitrifier I am considering uses a reaction chamber seperate from the aquarium. The methanol is consumed completely prior to the water in the chamber being flushed back into the aquarium.

Have you read through the methanol denitrator thread, might be worth your time.

yeah, it is pretty interesting stuff...read most of the thread but will wait until some of the wrinkles are ironed out before I try it...

I'm leaning pretty heavily towards doing it. Need to find a good pure source of methanol.

It would be awesome to have a 60 gpd water change. My rock is pretty old too and I'm sure it's leachng phosphate, so I'd probably go down the srno3 route too. It's a lot of effort for a tank with no corals, but I'll be interested to see the overall affects long term.

Happy to report that my Altivelis is eating a bit better in quarantine , PE mysis is definitely the preferred food. It was doing a lot of tasting and spitting out with the LRS food, but for some reason has really taken to the Mysis in the last week.

The pakistan is another story, it's losing weight and showing signs of Lymph. About the only food it is interested in are clams on the half shell I'm not truthfully sure how much it's ingesting.

I'm considering putting the pakistan in my cube as a last resort (I have some aiptasia in there), but I'm concerned it might mow down the zoas, maxima clam and nice orange plate that I just purchased at the frag swap yesterday.

Any chance it will preferentially go after the aiptasia and leave the others alone. I think I know the answer, but I figured it's worth putting out there.

Hopefully he will turn the corner for you. How was the WORC show, I thought about going but was really busy yesterday
