Butterflytown - 240 FOWLR

Hey Matt I think I will be ok without the bio balls. Doing another water change today to hopefully bring the nitrites from .25 to 0. I will let you know today sometime. SaltyAquaria has a Declivis for 300$ I think it was, 14 day guarantee

Blueline, lemon peel, 2 small borbonius anthias and 2 fire shrimp arrived today.

Happy belated birthday to me!

I'll try to get some pictures up tomorrow.

My apologies for the wonky formatting, should have turned the apple phone sideways.

The blueline has something, either flukes or ich, I haven't looked really closely yet to determine which. I'm debating whether to just start prazi or do a FW dip first. I'd typically do a FW dip, but the blueline is particularly skiddish of me and I don't feel like a FW dip is going to build much trust.

I'll try to get a better video tomorrow.

The borbs are eating well, and the lemonpeel is picking at food. Not definitively seen the blueline eating, but like I said, he's still pretty skiddish.

Here's a quick video of the altivelis. It's eating well, but only PE mysis and still isn't as plump as I'd prefer. The coral beauty is going to my brother in law.

Looks good, yeah, still has some plumping up to do. How's the puffer doing? I love those black dogfaces!

Puffer is good, all healed up. Waiting for the right time to introduce him back into the DT.

His wound is healed , but the skin hasn't returned back to black.

Altivelis is looking great, one of my favorite fish!
Mine only eats frozen and prefers raw shrimp and scallops which is a great way to fatten fish :)

Here's a quick little update on the new crew.

The lemon peel, and both borbonius have great appetites, the borbs have really fattened up since I've gotten them. I'm a little concerned about the larger of the two borbonius as it appears to have a slight swim bladder issue. I notice that it spends a lot of time swimming with it's head down. It eats well though, so I'm hopeful that it works out whatever issue it has.

The blueline is definitely shy, but it sampling food more readily. It appears to prefer smaller particles right now, as opposed to the large pieces of PE mysis and fish frenzy that I'm feeding. I'm in the middle of the first round of praise, so to have everyone eating or at least sampling food is a positive in my book.

When did you notice the swim bladder issue? From the start or later?

It had it when I received it. It's not worsened or improved.

If memory serves me, the borbonius I owned previously had a similar swimming pattern. Sometimes it's tough to tell between cryptic swimming behavior and an actual downward tendency, but in my opinion the larger if the two has that downward tendency. It helps that I have the smaller one to compare it to also.

Like I said before, I'm not overly concerned yet, but I was curious to know if anyone had suggestions to help with it, I.e. Changes I salinity or temperature.

I should probably post this in the official borbonius thread, but I know Peter has kept a number of anthias, so I thought he might have some input.

I actually never kept borbs, and none of my shallow water species that I kept ever had this issue. Sorry I can't be of more help :(

No worries, figured you might have a trick or two.

I plan to move the altivelis, puffer and multifasciatus into my DT next week. That poor multifasciatus has been through close to a 9 month quarantine period, but that thing is rock solid.

I have a photographer friend that is just getting into saltwater aquariums and I think i'm going to have him take a few pictures for me next week once I have everyone added. I'll be sure to post the decent ones.

I hope I'm not too late to save the anthias.
You should try to soak their food in epsom salt.

I have no experience with this but
There are also videos on youtube that teach you how to use a needle to puncture the air bladder and get air out. You should then use antibiotics to prevent secondary infection.

That's exciting Matt. What's next on your list of fish?

Pretty much only butterflies from here on out, not sure which one though.

The only exception would be if Ventralis Anthias or possibly purple or flashing tilefish become available. I'm a sucker for tilefish.

There's a butterlfy floating around out there right now that i'm really intersted in, but i'm heading to Boston on Saturday and won't be back until Tuesday. Not a great time to order a fish.

Sidebar...any decent fish stores in Boston I should visit? My buddy is running the marathon on Monday and I think I'm going to have some down time as running people probably get kind of boring to look at after a while.
