can I see some pics of bare bottom tanks?

Well, after reading through the split...(baaaah) and numerous other threads, I'm going to be switching out to BB by removing a bit at a time during water changes. One thing though, I have a sand sifting goby, whom I'm assuming will need a new home, as well as some Nassarius (or however it's spelt) snails which I don't really think I'll miss either of them. However, does anybody have fox corals or brains with a bb? How are they all doing?

Stunning tanks btw..

Good questions. The gobies will prob have to be moved. However, the brains (I've read at least) will be fine. You should be feeding them anyway so there shouldn't be any problems.

I've heard mixed opinions on the liverock/bare glass issues. Some say yes, others say no way. Personally, I feel like I want the added protection of some starboard on the bottom. An added bonus: It makes the bottom have a 'white look' which reflects the light better and just generally looks better. IMO.

In terms of the coasters.. I've never heard of that. I'm not really sure, to be honest. Unless it's a form of cardboard which many coasters are (that would be a bad idea).. I guess as long as you like the looks of it, and they're made with safe materials it'd be fine. Still wouldn't really help if there was a rockslide though.

Honestly I have never heard of anybody's tank being broken by a rock slide. It comes down to properly securing it @ the trime of setting the tank up.

Other than urchins and maybe some snails I can't see anything else being able to mess around with the rockwork bad enough to cause a rockslide.

i just went bb.

wondering about rocks on the glass. has anyone had cracking / trouble because of direct contact w/ rocks and glass? anyone had a rock fall and crack the tank from the bottom?

also, would it be ridiculous to use coasters under my live rock? http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=1&SKU=14917802

My 120 is BB and I wanted to have the rocks on bare glass... but then I started worrying... so I compromised, and made starboard "coasters" :D

Time to break some tables!

How about the bare FAUX bottom! 2 part clear epoxy + sand = bare bottom with sand look!

exactly how did you do it? did you mix it up in a bowl or something prior to putting it in? or did you put in the epoxy first and the sand on top it?

What about covering the bottom in eggcrate and putting in just enough sand to cover it?

that would defeat the purpose of a barebottom setup..

we're trying to get rid of sand all together. it is a nutrient trap, or 'sink'... and just gets filled up with detritus and other 'fun things'... also, with this setup, you wouldn't be able to control the flow as much. I like to get the detritus out of the water asap.

These are some great pictures of BB setups, by the way!

BB does sound good to me so far then. However, I have read that some people have a hard time with the buffering of pH and dKH

what happened to GSCHEIMER and his " looks booring and sterile " comments ?
I bet his sand covered tank crashed or is loaded with detritus and phosphates by now....while the BB tanks are still going strong...

These tanks look great! I might try going BB I should tell my wife that and watch her reaction.(honey I'm going Bare bottom).

I haven't had a problem w/ pH.. Take a look and read the first few pages of this thread; it explains it much better than I could.

In short: the sand doesn't really act as a buffer until the pH is too dangerous for saltwater fish life anyway, so you're really not seeing any benefit from the sand. There's much more info on this particular subject though

What about starboard (or cutting board) covered in epoxy and sprinkled with sand. Not much at all, just enough to color the starboard like sand?

I like the look of starboard itself. In time it will be covered with coraline algae anyway. The sand epoxied will be a place for detritus to become suspended as well.

OK. Starboard it is. I have test kits for dKH, Ca, Mg, phosphate, ammonia, pH, nitrate, and nitrite. I run a GEO 612 Ca reactor with CRM media, two media reactors in series (first carbon, next phosphate media), an AquaC EV 180 skimmer. Display is 90 gallons, sump is 29 gallon glass tank with fuge in the middle. Fuge has 4 inches of sand. Any reccomendations?
