Care of African blue zoanthids...

Kaylo,

Let me know if you think the protozoan is contagious.

Can you mention the flow in your aquarium, or how the blue steel colony was affected by either soft or strong current? I am trying to put together whether or not flow is the main factor in their success.

Thanks!

Eric

Maybe this has been said, but I believe that this protozoan IS contagious. Since I got my first colony (NOT from Eric), almost all of my zoa's seem to have contracted this. Colonies that used to grow out of control all seem to be receeding and some of my more finicky ones (Pyro's envy & Mauls) died off quite quickly within a month of getting the Blue Steels.

Is there anything I can do? It will have to be an in-tnak treatment since I have a 50lb 24in rock at the bottom of my scape that is being affected.

Even if I dipped the ones I could, wouldn't they just get it right back again from the ones I don't dip?

I have had mine for over seven months, always been low in my sand bed, never lost one polyp and they are multiplying like crazy, also the lfs that bought a 300 polyp mother colony were mine came from lost the whole thing.

hey all,

i have same/similar zoos and having similar problems. they were bought rescue from LFS. Had already been dipped (but kid didn't know in what). half colony closed half open. This was on sun. dipped colony in Furan 2, open pack per 1/2 gallon of tank water, for 20 minutes, today. After 2 more dips, over 2 days I want to dip in Formalin. All i could find locally was Quick Cure by Aquarium Products. It is a mix of Formalin/Malachite Green. Is this OK? % of Formalin not listed on package. emailed them about %, no reply as yet. How many drops?

thanx in advance

Mines still good. i gave away some frags here and there. Some came off the main rock that it came on and are now growing somewhere else.

Great thread has anyone tried lower salt levels. If there bieng collected from basicaly an estuary it seems to make sense.im not saying to keep them at a lower salinity forever just a small quarintene tank and graduly increase the levels.
For my part i started with about 100 and all but 3 died i now have 9 in medium flow about 8" from a 20k 175 halide.Im thinking of moving them to my sps tank under a 250 after reading the posts here. What do you all think?

Mine really died back shortly after I got them (( April or May )), to the point where I only had 2-3 left (( started with 25+ )). I just left them as is and didn't do anything special to the tank, just my normal maintenance. Now I am back up to 12, or so. Wish I knew what made them come back, because I can't think of a thing.

OMG! They've had these beauties at Extreme Corals and they are $300 a pop! I'm glad I didn't fork over the money even though I think they are the prettiest zoas I've ever seen.

Why are they SO EXPENSIVE?!?! Are they getting them from the part of Africa that has pirates?

As time passes keep posting on what works and what doesn't work.

Ive seen them for $30
Also saw a LFS with "Blue Steels" That looked identical to me same ring pattern and colors

tx update, tx works sucessfully.....

i did 1 dip in furan2 as directed....

1 dip in formalin(mixed with malachite green(only one available))

2 dips in furan 2

1 week isolated .....voila healthy zoos

as a side note i think formalin is what did it, try that first

a fellow reefer used this exact tx and it worked for him also

Hi Sdcfish|sdceric, having just read through this whole thread trying to find out the best way to maintain these Zoa's longterm as I am due to get lots of colonies round about the 14th, and I noticed that you are based in LA and it would seem the zoa's I am receiving are quite possibly coming from you. Therefore i'm hoping that although you haven't been online for a while you are still visiting RC and will see this message. Anyway, out of interest, as your last update was a few months ago, have you made any progress on keeping these zoa's healthly long term? also, how long do you hold onto stock before you ship out again.

Stu

Has anyone had any long term success with these yet. More then 3 months or have any growth shots or lack there of.

Mines are now ALL gone, lasted a for a while... surprised it lasted longer than some of the wild colonies I got before.

Mine died back to 2 heads, but those two have been ok for the last 3-4 months. Starting to see a new head or two. Nothing major though.

Abs

Hello everyone,
I would also like to thank everyone for all the long replies and info in this thread. I wanted to pass on information I have had in keeping these alive so far. I purchased a colony 8 months ago. Initially I lost quiet a few after the first month passed. I did do some fragging after I first received colony just to spread them around in case I was not fortunate. I watched a few LFS's fail at keeping any alive and believe i'm the last in my area with these. I tried high lighting and high flow, med lighting and med flow. <-- much to my disbelief this caused the retraction of my colony or so it seemed at the time. Now I should point out that I take a very natural approach to reefing, if it does not do well without dips etc I do not expect it to last the duration. So I do not dip etc. Only Lugal's is added to tank when I think about it. Until 5 weeks ago I never supplemented anything alse as many reefers do. Polyps normally do well in my tanks and I have not used more then a Q-tip to treat anything. I just brush off the brown stuff and everything returns to normal within a few days. I believe this also helps the animal build up immunity. I run a constant 78.2 degrees temp and natural seawater salinity. I also run dirty tanks. I only use carbon in my canister filter and do not have a sump. I have a cheap phos-reactor and an oversized skimmer. Water changes have been weekly until recently. <-- That is all nothing special. System is old also so very stable.
Ok well enough about my brutal way of reef-keeping and back to the ABS. I had two diff types of Ding-Dangs from Hawaii that are in 2 seperate tanks. Both have been half-open for a few months. No necrosis or dying off has occurred. I mentioned this to another reefer and he suggested I use suppliments. He told me strontium and calcium. so I grabbed what was needed and left without arguing. <-- I'm just reluctant because of bad experience with suppliments 12 years ago when I started all this.
Ok so 5 weeks has gone by and I changed water changes from weekly to bi-monthly and have been supplimenting. Looks like the Ding-Dangs are doing better but are not quiet right yet, With this observation I noticed the ABS started bouncing back. The yellow which had been absent from the plate has returned and they are looking larger. Mine are on the bottom of the tank approx 30 inches below 320 watts of T5 geisemann bulbs.
I still feel like i'm having a suppliment issue and i'm looking for further recommendations. What I feed is so random, it must be 10 diff things mysis, oyster, etc, etc...
So with all this being too much info, what other success is out there?
sorry if anyone gets confused ABS= African Blue Steele = African Blue Hornet. Mine came from Ghana also, I tracked the colony from there...
Thanks everyone,
Tom
