Care of African blue zoanthids...

OMG! They've had these beauties at Extreme Corals and they are $300 a pop! I'm glad I didn't fork over the money even though I think they are the prettiest zoas I've ever seen.

Why are they SO EXPENSIVE?!?! Are they getting them from the part of Africa that has pirates?

As time passes keep posting on what works and what doesn't work.

Hmmm...makes me laugh that if they throw "Africa" in front of them suddenly they are worth more money. They are identical to the Florida blues and do just as bad in a captive system.

mabey water temp, mabey lighting, who knows.

i think there so expensive because there blue and everyone wants them but the demand is double now that they melt you have to buy more.

I've got some Caribbean zoas that I've had for three or four years now. They haven't grown at all like other zoas (running a net loss over the years, actually). Some people have them doing great for months, then they crash. Not sure what the deal is...

I just bought a colony of these guys from zoanthids.com. Don't get them till Wednesday but now I am wishing I didn't order them. They were only $25 for five heads, better than $300 like someone posted earlier, but still it seems like money wasted. Will have to keep you posted on how they do once I get them.

I have mine for over 2 weeks and no problems so far. here is a pic

you might be surprised, but I got it before the gold rush started and didnt pay anywhere near what you could see on some sites. also, was able to apply 15% discount I have at my LFS. all in all, I think I paid close to $175. I have sold a few frags by now so the rock is almost for free.

my LFS had 2-3 colonies of them. if i knew about upcoming gold rush i would have taken all of them. but was scared to death after reading some comments about them melting right away. one of my friends lost a mini colony in 2 days.

when i come home from work - i go straight to the tank to see if everything is open. but so far so good.

lost a mini colony in 2 days. If you read around here and other forums, this is somewhat of a common occurance with these polyps. I for one am also a victim of this.

Not only does this "meltdown' occurs on African Zoas but also on Aussie and/or Deepwater Zoas as well.

Ever wonder what's the main cause?? Even after dipping TMPCC .... hhmmmm  ?

Deepwater Zoas as well..

I agree plus the added pox too. Which I think on deepwaters MORE resilient than the regular pox that non Deepwaters get. its been 3 weeks already and using 2 packets still not much dent.

Good deal. What is your water temp, lighting and flow like. I was talking to a guy who has had a colony for about a month now and he says his temp is 76 degrees, they are in a high light area and a high water flow area. Any thoughts? I am not going to drop my tank temp 2 degrees though for a single frag of zoas. All my other stuff is thriving.
