Care of African blue zoanthids...

it is located on the sand bed with decent flow since it is in the middle of the tank. temp? I try to keep around 78 degrees. tank is in the basement so not much temp spikes observed. light? T5 NEP 6 lights - standart set up ATI bulbs - blue plus, aquablue spezial, blue plus, pro color, aquablue spezial, blue plus. lets see what will happen. I dose vitamin C once a day. it is open today. I am scared a little bit but I broke even on the colony so whatever happens - happens.

Good deal. What is your water temp, lighting and flow like. I was talking to a guy who has had a colony for about a month now and he says his temp is 76 degrees, they are in a high light area and a high water flow area. Any thoughts? I am not going to drop my tank temp 2 degrees though for a single frag of zoas. All my other stuff is thriving.

At least you made it this far. I once spent too much on some purple people eaters. The minute I put the frag in the tank a fish knocked them off the plug and I watched them float o so gracefully under about 120lbs of live rock never to be seen again. I run t5s too and my other zoas do great. We will see.

Mine are doing fine so far. I have a colony about the size of the picture rniedzia posted above. They're on the sand bed under a 175-watt 14K Reeflux halide and three 140-watt VHO actinics, and shaded by a huge Colt coral with medium flow. Will keep y'all posted... Crossing fingers... :)

how many frags I lost to the abbys of my tank? - not even going into that special topic. but i decided to do a different approach. once i get some small and new, I put them on my frag display for 3-4 weeks. it easier to observe, take them out if needed and once I see some growth than I move them and glue the frag to a LR. Right now, I am keeping an eye on Aussie Blue and Aussie Rainbow that I bought 4 weeks ago.

Saw mention of Aussie zoas...don't mean to hijack, but it might be related...

I've got a frag I've had for about a month, and another frag and colony I've had for a few weeks. These are the blues like zoagirl's avatar. They seem very prone to zoapox, the colony I picked up after I paid online and it was COVERED in them, though still opening fine. I furan2ed the heck out of it and they are all gone, now pox has shown up in here and there on some other zoas, but so far nothing the furan doesn't handle quickly. Once they were done with furan, the Aussie blues have exploded, and big blobs of tissue are covering the tile completely. So maybe once they are over the hump they are good growers? Maybe the African blues are the same way? Seems like a lot of wild zoas don't take well to captivity right away.

How long have you had yours?

I like that approach. Once I have more money I will eventually be able to have a couple tanks for different purposes. I am supposed to get my africans tomorrow, hopefully they will at least show up alive.

Well it turns out zoanthids.com did not ship my corals to me today like I requested since today is the only day I would be home to receive them. Now I will never know how african zoas will do in my tank since I had to cancel my order because their shipping days do not coincide with my schedule. Hopefully they will understand on oblige!

Thanks

So I actually got a call from zoanthids.com today, they made things all better and to top it off they threw in some purple hornets for free. Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw a large colony softball size at a LFS today for $100.
I couldn't bring myself to getting it though with all the trouble people are having keeping these things.

FWIW, I bought three polyps (and a baby) today from a local LFS for $30. They're DEF on the top of the list as far as colors go, hopefully mine will survive.

Kaylo... BUY THEM; I'm predicting that these are going to be the next purple hornet, watch & see! :D

I think I might if they are still there tomorrow. I am starting to do some work at the store for store credit, so I can essentially get them for free. I think it's worth a shot.

I hope they DON'T become the next PH's. The prices are outrageous on them for no other reason than want/need IMO. Even if I have a colony and they are thriving, I would feel criminal charging those prices for anything.

Kaylo... nice to hear, at least your heart is in the right place! :)

Maybe sometime I can buy/trade some zoas with you? LMK.

Trading sounds fun. :D

Right now most of my stuff is small frags though. I'm waiting for it to start growing out. I like taking small pieces of a big colony from my tank. I'm getting sick of looking at a ton of frags but that's the way it has to be until I set my frag tank up this summer.

On another note. I have the colony of african blues on hold for me. I think I will bring it home tomorrow after work. I have a good partial shade spot all put aside for it. I will get pics a.s.a.p. and keep everyone updated with progress.

For the people having luck with them, are you spot feeding them all?
