Care of African blue zoanthids...

Interestingly I picked up a very similar colored Zoa colony from the same store where I found these Blue "Africians" or "Floridas" or what ever they are. The coloring is somewhat different but it is unusual to get two interesting colonies like this in Wichita in such a short time.

The new ones: My picture makes them look more purple but there is quite a bit of blue to them.

This comment is from one of the importers of these zoos.

"It's important that everyone knows that these colonies are found in very shallow water, and in high surge zones. We have been very successful keeping them open and thriving by providing them with high flow, and moderate lighting. Definately the high flow is the key to these gems, so please take care of them appropriately and pass this message onto your customers. "

I'm picking up a 75+ polyp colony of these beauties later today. Thanks for all of the usefull information guys. I think I will cut up the colony into 4-5 frags and place them in different parts of the tank to see what they like.

thats a good idea jeff i have mine at the bottom of the tank on the side of my vortech, so it does get a nice undertow current and im running eight t-5s. Had them for two weeks now and they seem to like it. I think these zoos take better with a little stronger current than most zoos.

I wanna see some pics jeff!
When I get them, I'll take a picture or two and report back here as they thrive or die.

The guy I'm buying them is known for keeping rare zoas so I am going to ask his advice first and try to mimic his conditions as far as flow and light before doing anything drastic but I will probably end up fragging the colony within a few days of them opening up in my tank.

My single polyps frags that were acquired shortly after MAX have 5-8 polyps now... I just threw them in there and left them. I did notice some pox pop up two weeks ago, but it appears to be gone now.

When I first bought this frag {tonight} I thought they were Purple Hornets but now I know that they are African Blue's...still a beautiful Zoa. They are under T5's mid way on a 65g with moderate to medium flow. Zoa's do very well in my tank so I am curious to see how they do...

When I first bought this frag {tonight} I thought they were Purple Hornets Hope you didn't pay an arm and a leg for some polyps that you thought were PH's and ended up with a polyp that's being distributed throughout the how US.

I paid $6/polyp which I didn't think was unreasonable given the color scheme. What has me more concerned is high mortality rate...only time will tell.

Not bad a price.

I highly suggest folks to wait for tank propagated polyps of these specific coral to come around.

Dont mean to hijac the thread, but-

Could any of you guys that have gotten these zoas, and have a good enough relation with the owner of the store/guy who dose the ordering to get an honest answer ask where these zoas, in fact, come from?

I am sure, unless you have a real good relation with the guy, and they know of the hype of "african" zoas, they are likely to respond africa, but I would like to find out what they have to say either africa, or another place. Most store owners can find out through their distributers where these are actually coming from, and would like this info. It can only help in the original posters question, and may lead to help in answering it.

Store in New Zealand reckon his last shipment came from Indonesia. Might be a different morph as I didn't see it but he reckoned they were similar.
