Carpet Nems

Which carpet nem is sand dwelling? I know by definition they all are but how about Gigs vs Haddoni? I am asking because I would like to know where to place them and where do they usually attach themselves and do they move around like on top of rocks or always somewhere on the sand by near rocks?

thanks thats what i thought but i heard from someone that said Gigs are rock dwelling, which seemed abit funny so i wanted to confirm that i was right.

Sand dwellers can however be found adjacent to rocks both in the aquarium and in nature but a lot of times they're just found in sea grass beds or mixed substrate areas.

ok serioously, i would recommend you read the threads in these forum (do a search for carpet in the "Anemone & clownfish" forum. there are tons of info on them. you will be amaze how much information you will end up with.

i know the answer to your question, but i'd rather see you go search and read on the available info. b/c you will learn alot more than the 1 question you asked.

Thanks for your suggestion on searching, I already did some on here and on google. I was just surprised someone that said he has 10+ years experience with carpet nems mention to me that Gigs are rock dwelling.

And that was most likely me. And I believe I said that they "tend" to prefer being on a rock. And from all the ones I have seen (( never kept any personally, just Haddonis )), they were on rocks.

I have had 4 gigs and all have attached to the rock. I have even tried DD's suggestion of digging a hole into the sand and let the gig attach, still on the rock. I have made 4" holes all the way to the glass bottom of the tank, and they still always move and attach to the rock.
Maybe it's just my tank, but even the gigs that I have seen in the numerous LFS's have all been attached to the rock.

I wouldn't consider gig's to be sand dwellers. They certainly aren't obligate sand dwellers like haddoni and IMHO doreensis or malu. They may set up shop near the sand/rock interface, but they don't need to conceal their foot like true sand dwellers do.

I think I would fall into this category. My 16+ year gigantea is still attached to a rock ( same rock for at least 14 years. It is at the sand interface). The other gig that I had for 7-8 years was always attached to a rock (near the sand)

Thanks guys I guess it seems from all the responses giving Gigs perfer to attatch to baseo of rocks near sandbed level and not strickly on rock level like say a RBTA does.

IMHO, lighting and flow are the two determining factors that dictate where a gigantea will hang out. If they find that comfy spot half way up your rocks, that's where they will be. If its closer to the sand, well.......

FWIW, I took these on the GBR. The foot was in the sand (presumably.) I imagine you can make out the rest.

Ditto. My gig has never been in the sand, and prefers the highest point on the rocks. The pic in my avatar is the lowest its ever been.

I thought they might be but the tentacles all appeared to be the same length. So, I was guessing S. gigantea.
