Chevron Tang living with Desjardini Tang

Got a Chevron Tang three weeks ago, then a desjardini the following week (slightly larger than chevron). They fought for 2-3 days and now are good buddies. The two tangs also encouraged the orange spotted rabbit fish I had in there to come out swim in the open more often. I was holding off sharing until they are all well established, eating like pigs, and stopped fighting.

You're not going to get much 'love' putting either of these fish in a 90! Rookie mistake .....

They will got along now but both those fish need tanks 6 feet or more when fully grown.Have you ever seen a FULL grown desjardini tang?They are huge and would be more than likely to attack the chevron

I agree. Those fish will not get very long in this sized tank. You have at least three algae grazers (members of the same ecological niche) in a tank that is way too small.

Chevron tang gets 11 inches long and needs a 180
Sailfins get 14 inches and aggresive, they need a 240
Orangespot rabbitfish get 16 inches and according to liveaquaria need 180 gallons
So that leads to my next question, why did you buy them?
Anyway they may be pretty now, but In 2 years atleast 2 of the 3 will be picked off

I have to agree with the posts, however, I currently have a D. Tang, Royal Blue Tang, and Yellow Tang all in my 180.
I have all my rocks penisula style though- with nothing on the back wall and a nice wide swimming lane down the back too.
So, 6ft, + 2ft (sides), + 6ft, + 2 ft unempeded swimming lanes, and lots of overhangs, tunnels to swim through also.

You're in that city that is 73.79 Sq. miles surrounded by Reality?

Oh yeah, I am totally upgrading to 180 in the next month or two- already getting my wife's eye ball rolling!

I have a chevron & sailfin(plus other tangs) in my 5ft 120, they are doing fine. Plus they are much bigger than those two.

My Chevron is over 10" right now and is a beast. Has recently decided to put a whooping on my black tang (6"), Purple Tang (4"), and Achillies Tang (6"), in a 500+ tank.

Your 180 will be too small shortly...either way, it is one of my favorite fish of all time...

Im already trying to figure out what to do for my next tank. Got a 265, but magnifica anemone has alraddy outgrown it and my sailfin wont be far behind. 500 gallon sounds about right!

It moves around the rock a bit, but when perched on the very top, its tentacles brush both the front and rear glass - 24" Probably I will have to rehome it; not an easy task because a really big tank will be required.

general question- when fish become aggressive to each other who were once peaceful, what are some of the factors? I know obviously space, but do other things like food, oxygen level, and mating season cause aggression at home aquarium? I want to hear everyone's opinion that I can prevent brawls even after a significant upgrade in size to eliminate one of the factors, but would like to also keep other factors in check. Thanks in advance!

wow, I thought the a chillies would have been the most aggressive of them all! Were they mingling fine before? did your chevron turned aggressive simply due to size and space or are other factors mixed in as well? I just want to know so I can try to limit these factors. Thanks!

You should frag that puppy! That way you could still keep him around and give the gift to some other folks

I wanna see this 10" chevron. IMO they are probably okay in a 4-5 foot tank as the only tang. I've had mine about 7-8 years and he's probably 7-8" but I'm just guesstimating. He now lives in a 180 with a smaller achillies they never even look at each other other then when I feed nori. They both eat off the same clip often at the same time daily. Prior to the. 180 he was in a 5 foot 112 mostly alone but I did have a powder brown tang for a few years.

I have not kept that many tangs for many years but in my experience the chevron is much slower and doesn't cruise like many other species.
