Christmas Island Emperor

Lots of misinformation about the CXI emps! (CXI=christmas island)

Not ALL CXI emps will have the orange tail. I have had plenty that didn't, and plenty that have.

The juveniles you cannot tell if it will be orange or yellow. Most likely yellow, as most people agree the orange tail has to do with diet in the wild (what diet, they still dont know)

The smallest adult i have seen with orange tail was just under 4". for this ONE adult at this size with orange tail i've seen 10x more with yellow tails.

Your best bet is to find a small adult changing or just changed with the orange tail, and HOPE it keeps it. A lot of the adults with orange tails will lose the orange color, and revert to a yellowish color - still nicer than just yellow, but not as orange as most would like.

I have even seen some with nearly red tails - which was incredible. However, very very rare with this deep orange/reddish color.

I love the juvies. they are bullet proof, and are much deeper in color than normal emperors. the only choice for me if i was going to keep one.

excellent and accurate post...

I dunno, something about the ones with dorsal streamers intrigues me....

True, if I could get one from Viet Nam with a filament would be nice...but not sure I want such a large and possibly dangerous fish...lol, just got rid of last emp who was beginning to turn the corner..

I wonder if the aggression is towards large other aggressive fish, or would it really beat the snot out of my little butterflies....

My last was beginning to go after my much larger Cortez and would even take on the massive Sohal when she saw the Sohal going after the Cortez...poor Cortez, such a mellow fish...I still have the Cortez, lol...

That's my point... does it get aggressive to large, competitor fish, or everyone.

well, mine was clearly making a shot to be alpha fish...though, because I got rid of him I am not sure how it would have played out...was def. focused and more aggressive towards the larger and more aggressive fish...there was no way the Sohal would have allowed the emp to be alpha...the emp did get a bit testy with smaller fish but it did not get to a dangerous point- like it was getting to be with the Cortez...
the cortez just wanted to be left alone and is a totally mellow fish...

true! Red Sea is also very nice. Im a little biased, as i see lots of CXI emps. Such awesome personality. I have also seen 13" CXI emps, so i know how big they get! lol

I saw a pair of emps in Kwajalein while diving. Monsters, easily over a foot, and the male (i believe the male) had a 3" streamer. They were VERY nice. and not afraid at all (and very shallow)

Overall - emps are great fish for the right size tank

How's the online availability of the Juveniles? I would love to get one, but it seems like my local stores that I have asked cannot give me any answers on availability.

I've had him for a bit over six months now. He was 5 inches in length and is closer to 6 inches now. If anything his tail has gotten more color in it since I've owned him.
When I put together my new tank, I asked my friend Randy, who is a close friend to Rufus to have Rufus catch me a CXI Emperor. A month later he was delivered.
Here is a couple of new pics of him.

He chases my Goldflake angel, but is very good with my other fish so far.

Christmas Island Emperors

Reefsandrotts,
I agree the tank does look small in the video. I am looking into the side of the 300 gallon seemless bow. The tank is approx 80X 32 X 26
